The news that xxxHolic is to have its new anime (OAD) bundled with the 14th volume of the manga, due Jan. 16th, has been quickly followed by news that ツバサ / Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle is also set to get an anime DVD attached to the 26th volume of the manga, due Febuary.
Animation is set to be undertaken by Production IG; they both look to be 25 minute single episodes.
Could these developments presage new series? It does not seem economic to go to the trouble of organising a cast and staff for single episode productions, unless it is some sort of pilot or recurrent project.
It also seems that we are witnessing something of an attempt to change the business and marketing model for OAV sales lately, what with the deliberate coining of the OAD (Original Anime DVD) label and the persistent efforts to tie the manga and anime productions together.
Whether this is just a marketing ploy for forcing fans to buy bundled products, or a new way of delivering anime which might otherwise be uneconomic remains to be seen.

Call me a purist of sorts, but OAV/OVA has always been the acronym given to, well, an OAV. OAD sounds weird, and besides it's still a 'video' per se, just not a video on cassette. I mean up until the early 2000's they might as well have been called an OAL (Original Animation Laserdisc) for the popularity of the medium in Japan before the advent of the PS2 more or less.
I read the first 10 volumes of Tsubasa or so, it seems to me with the exception of say, X and Geass most of CLAMP's stories tend to head toward this banal familiarity, the ubiquitous CLAMP storyline. Don't get me wrong, I like Tsubasa and xxxHolic and most of CLAMP's works, but after a while it gets a little rough to follow. I hope I'm completely wrong about where the story headed and when/if I do finally catch up it pleasantly surprises me, but I'm not holding my breath.
Which reminds me, it would be somehow epic if the guys from Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle stumbled into Brittanian Geass world XD
