Actually after the Meiji restauration these 'shunga arts' has been banned...( Don't forget, the westernization of the country meant also the 'christianization' of it...)

But they were highly popular in the Edo - era parallel to the ukiyo-e arts...Actually a lot of ukiyo-e masters did shunga as well :P And shunga arts also contained 'yaoi' and bisexual themes XD

The term 'shunga' itself comes from the Meiji era, but in the past several words were used :
makura-e (枕絵 pillow pictures), warai-e (笑い絵 pictures to laugh) or tsugai-e (番い絵 kopulation pictures )

As a matter of fact, Japanese society for the most part was very liberal all along. The Westernization period was the only exception after the induction of Western values.

Proof that the Japanese were just-as-effed-up long before Westerners came along and corrupted their society.

Shunga never fails to deliver the lulz.

What's missing is the numerous shunga sculptures that look tame from a distance but have explicit detail on the underside.

I've also seen shunga prints of the Seven Fortunes engaged in an orgy.

    Oh Japan.

    Fourth image = Epic fail.
Didn't lived up to the legendary Shunga woodcut.

dude some real hardcore stuff here. love the fact all the images are explicitly exagerated. fantastic stuff. especially love the illustrated advert for the dildo's and tortoise shell condoms. rare treat. well done. am questioning the origin of the yaoi one on the end though. where did that come from?

It's from around the time of the Russo-Japanese war, which as you'll recall, Japan won rather soundly. Yes, it's a Japanese soldier raeping a Russian soldier...
