Murakami Suigun

Probably one of the very best CG artists around, 村上水軍の館 / Murakami Suigun has been providing superb digital illustrations for many years now, and has accrued much fame and fortune as a result. Since many others have examined his eminently wallpaper suitable illustrations in detail, I shall focus on his more warped erotic and fetishistic illustrations, not a displeasing prospect in the slightest I must admit.

Murakami Suigun’s works span a fairly wide range, though only within the realm of CG art, with his excellent Fetishistic Illustrations (F-ism) doujin CDs probably being his most famous and accomplished works. There are now 12 of these, and they exhibit great variation in content, but little variation in the high level of skill on display. Getting all of them with any semblance of convenience is likely to involve a little searching online.

He has however also achieved significant success as an artist for a wide variety of eroge, as well as adventure games for a general audience, though these do not seem to display the same accomplishment as his original illustrations. With callous disregard I shall ignore all these in favour of F-ism.

The most common element in his commendably varied works is doubtless the maid – whether as innocuous wallpapers or objects of erotic torment, he never eschews an opportunity to draw one. Results are more than satisfactory, even for those indifferent to maids.

The other most common element is probably the rope – he seems a great fan of shibari in particular, though general western bondage is also common. Miko also feature.

Since he has not to my knowledge produced anything in his illustrious career but the character illustrations for which he is known, it isn’t really appropriate to consider him as anything other than a character designer/CG artist, and he undeniably excels in this – I cannot really think of any significant shortcomings he exhibits without unfairly asking for work outside his field.

So in conclusion, Murakami Suigun is a master illustrator, and his works are well worth a thorough perusal, especially to /d/ fans as you have seen, though it is unfortunate he has not seen fit to try his talents across a broader field of endeavour than CG art.
