Controller Hell

A truly huge array of controllers has been released for Nintendo’s Famicon system, many of which have never been seen outside Japan, perhaps something to be thankful for. You are doubtless wondering what on earth the above controller is for; it is a specialised pachinko controller for such famous games as “Pachinko Daisakusen Series”, on the NES. Below is the terrifying JoyBall, as well as the frankly awe-inspiring Meijin-kun, amongst others.
The dread JoyBall; apparently an unmanageable beast, however innovative the design.
The Urutech 3 Meijin-kun.
The reviewer says it better than I could: “I don’t really understand the setup, but the white switch on top of the D-pad lever performs the function of the A/B button. Who on earth designed this thing I don’t know, but what’s even more amazing is that somebody thought this thing would sell (anyone who bought it is pretty amazing too).”
“To me, it’s a rare gem”. Indeed. Astonishingly, he still sees it on sale from time to time. In case you are wondering, it is a completely uncontrollable controller. He gives it a deserved 5 (of 5) for design, and 0 for control.
The Ascii Stick L5 is a specialised one handed controller for use with RPGs. Somehow it never caught on.
The erstwhile Power Glove did actually attain some fame, so you may be familiar with it already.
The excellent rogue’s gallery of NES controllers, Controller Hell, has many more, complete with reviews, some of which actually look quite usable. I am particularly curious about the yet unreviewed “Climber Stick”, which you can see at the base of the page.

Oshit-
The POWERGLOVE.
Angry nintendo nerd's review for it was awesome.
I love the Power Glove... It's so... BAD.
Yeah. I went there.
If Lucas sees the Power Glove on Sankaku, HE IS NOT AMUSED.
all i can think when i see the joy ball is can you imagine is poke'mon had been around when that came out?
i cant believe ive never heard of the The Urutech 3 Meijin-kun where has this been seen on sale thats the only one there i dont have.
so why do the JoyBalland The Urutech 3 Meijin-kun make me think of weird sex toys?
wow, somebody needs to link the NERD to this.
That's the first thing I thought when I saw the last pic.
Leave it to me! ^^
I have seen his Power Glove and Virtual Boy review...these controllers will actually make him do the things he cuss about. :)
The Urutech actually looks okay. I think it was designed for use with side scrolling shooters for that era. You never know until you try it with specific games. I don't think its fair to judge a controller based on its usability with mainstream games. It's like trying to play Street Fighter with a dance pad, driving wheel or light gun.
The L5 looks fantastic; definitely well-designed for one hand gameplay (especially for those who have one injured or unusable hand). The drawback is that your hand gets tired easily and it's only for right handed users. But it's not that different than the Wii controller, honestly. Imagine if you someone designed the Wii controller back in the NES days; wouldn't it be considered wierd? Then again these controllers are optional; we're all forced to use the Wii controllers anyway.
The first controller looks like it was designed for comfort. It may look wierd, but that red piece of plastic in the middle isn't just for show. It's where you rest your other fingers, or use it as a shoulder/trigger button. It would have been good if they were made out of rubber than plastic...
The second picture, well, I can't imagine how to even use the Joyball.
Honestly, the worst control design ever has to be the original NES controller itself.
And what the hell is that last controller at the bottom? The orange one? At the main page?
Oh, you forgot the DualShock.
