
Some celebrations are in order for followers of the most visually sumptuous and innovative anime of recent years, to say nothing of its biting satire, as details of a new OVA release of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei have emerged, to be titled 獄・さよなら絶望先生 / Goku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (Goku meaning jail, but seemingly punning on 極 / Goku, meaning exceedingly).
Quoth the official site: “Has there ever been such a reckless project? Limited Edition Comic with included Original Animation DVD announced!”

Yet another opportunity to ogle the fantastic level of improvement the visually sumptuous anime Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei exhibits in its DVD editions versus the TV broadcasts. It really is most impressive how much extra refinement goes into such an already impressive visual experience.

Another Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei DVD, another DVD versus TV comparison: DVD 2 and now 3 (see below). What is really striking about these is how much extra effort has gone into the already gorgeous visual quality of this fine anime; a good enough argument for waiting for the DVD release over watching the TV broadcast.

Seeing this terrifyingly detailed comparison of the differences between DVD and broadcast versions of 俗・さよなら絶望先生/Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei DVD 2 compelled me to watch the DVD… and as I found in my previous look, it is as visually striking as ever, and with great originality, if at times overly reliant on wordplay. It is also strangely fulfilling to take screenshots of.
