As if it were not already plain enough how much the tastes of American anime fans differ to those of the Japanese, a survey of what the Japanese think of the USA’s “Top 30 Anime Classics” confirms it in no uncertain terms, with Ghost in the Shell and Akira yet again losing out to such genre classics as Pokemon, although it seems virtually everyone can agree on the greatness of Ghibli.

China’s latest ploy to ensure universal acceptance of its ancient and inalienable claim to the Senkaku isles has been to take out an ad in the New York Times asking Americans how they would react to Japan inexplicably claiming Hawaii – although some have pointed out comparisons of Japan claiming Hawaii to China claiming parts of Okinawa may be rather more appropriate than intended.

The well deserved reputation of Americans for tolerance and humility has been highlighted by a series of widely circulated Tweets trumpeting the USA’s Olympic victory over Japan as “revenge for Pearl Harbor” (two nukes and 70 years of suzerainty apparently not being enough), in the otherwise obscure and unwatched sport of women’s football – where the USA received a drubbing at the hands of Japan’s team in 2011, which was responded to with the expected good grace.
