It has emerged that Tokyo governor, manga ban proponent and prominent rape novelist Shintaro Ishihara has sent letters to ten of the publishers now boycotting the Tokyo International Anime Fair, which he chairs, begging them to relent and return to the fold.

Beleaguered anime producer Gonzo has by way of its participation at the Tokyo Anime Fair announced its support for Ishihara’s policies of anime censorship, and has also announced a continuation to its hit anime Last Exile in the form of a new series.

Japan’s prime minister Naoto Kan has deplored the devastation Tokyo governor Ishihara has wrought on the Tokyo International Anime Fair, stressing the importance of spreading anime to the world and urging all sides to come to an accommodation even as Shueisha announced it will be blocking any Shonen Jump anime from appearing there.

10 publishers, including Kodansha, Shogakukan and Kadokawa, have announced they will have nothing to do with the Tokyo International Anime Fair due to the persecution the Tokyo government has been directing at them.
It now appears the event may as well be cancelled – if they are lucky Disney will show up, but not much else is left.

The ongoing Tokyo International Anime Fair 2010 began on Thursday, and as expected there is a generous amount of promotion of new anime series and movies due out later this year at the event.
