2D vs 3D CG – Tales of Hearts

The unusual decision to release the latest Tales RPG “Tales of Hearts” in two versions with drastically differing visual styles in the movies and packaging, one based on 3D computer graphics ala Final Fantasy, the other on classic Tales anime visuals, turned heads when it first came to light, particularly given the dubious choice of character designs in the 3D version.

Turned heads, much as a grisly traffic accident does. It does not seem the 3D version is selling well in Japan; second-hand sales reveal the 2D version is selling for 30% more than the 3D version. Some take this as a sign of the ill-advised nature of the  scheme…

Famitsu seem to have it in for the Tales series – whilst they have frequently featured the games on their covers, the artist they retain to provide these illustrations leaves much to be desired in a number of areas…

2D vs 3D CG – Tales of Hearts

The upcoming Tales of Hearts, for the DS this winter, is set to have two different versions, one with cutscenes in the anime style the Tales series has traditionally used to great effect, and another in a Final Fantasy style CG style; all of this is very puzzling, but what is even more puzzling is how the two will look.

As you can see, the 3D version comes of looking like “a gang of cosplayers”, and there is little doubt which version will be selling, in Japan at least.
