Outrage Over Celebrity Food Indulgence

Outrage from TV viewers has resulted in angry letters being sent to Japan’s Broadcasting Ethics and Program Improvement Organization, with regard to a show where celebrities leisurely indulged in food far too expensive for any normal person.

Rei Ayanami Ita-Ramen On Sale

The seemingly immortal Evangelion franchise is producing  another bizarre product: Evangelion-themed packages of instant garlic ramen, decorated with images of Rei Ayanami and AT-field shaped fishcake toppings.

The flavor of the dish must be good, as apparently it is “Rei orderded”.

Ita-Curry Craze Sweeps Akiba

The latest consumer good to receive an upgrade via the otaku fine art of ita-fication is modern Japan’s favorite foreign dish, curry. Toradora, ef: a tale of melodies, Musubi of Sekirei and even dear Nagisa-chan of Clannad have received their own ita-curry products, catered specifically for otaku culinary taste.

Eroge illustrator Aoi Nishimata (Shuffle!), the same artist whose moe ita-rice became a huge marketing coup for a small town last year, has also lent her talents to the creation of moe curry, illustrating the cover art for the farming region’s brand of beef curry with the above image of a moe kimono-clad woman.

Apparently, the growing reach of Akiba (and moe) knows few boundaries.

Touhou Canned Tea Vending Machine

Combining some of the most tired Japan related memes available, “strange items sold from vending machines – only in Japan!” and “things which shouldn’t be canned but are anyway – crazy Japanese!”, along with moe marketing, this Touhou tea-in-a-can vending machine looks set to become a favourite for desperate Akiba news sites.

The vending machine is currently operational in central Akihabara near all the interesting PC parts shops (right by T-Zone it would appear), so some of you may wish to pay a visit, if only to gawp.

A nekomimi themed maid café in Akihabara will be holding a special “Toradora x Index” event next week, with the menu offering the likes of “Minori‘s Purin” and “Index‘s Donburi”.

The maids are sure to be dressed in appropriate cosplay, plus there is the promise of limited edition presents to customers, and even the opportunity to pay $40 to eat from the “Purin Bucket”, better known here as Minorin’s Raep Bucket.

Strike Witches Ita-Bento

This picture of an edible Strike Witches’ Gertrud Barkhorn nori (seaweed) decorated rice comes to us via Danny’s.

Fears of Photoshop tend to arise from similar photos, but in this case the texture of the nori and only a simple cut-out stenciling job required might make that unlikely?

Ita-Rice Proves Huge Success

Ero Ita-Rice – Aoi Nishimata

Several months ago we reported on the introduction of what could be called “ita-rice” -  bags of rice decorated with a moe illustration by well-known female eroge artist 西又葵 / Aoi Nishimata (Shuffle!, Final Approach, etc.)

This unique approach to selling rice has since turned into a huge marketing coup for the small town of Ugomachi (Akita Prefecture), with reportedly 2 entire years’ worth of sales of rice being sold in only 1 month.
