Japanese magazine Famitsu has officially declared that the PlayStation 3 had the best games library in 2010.

Of the 516 games Famitsu reviewed last year, 77 of 103 (75%) PS3 games, 65 of 97 (67%) Xbox 360 titles, and 27 of 43 (62%) Wii games earned at least 30 out of 40 points. While this may not be the most scientific of methods for declaring a winner of the console war, it does point to Japan’s love of the PS3.

Nintendo did edge Sony out in the portable category though, with 58 of 117 (50%) games making the cut, over the PSP’s 56 of 130 (43%). Mobile + Japan (or America) = Nintendo. Still.

Perhaps an American publication could follow suit so we could see how things did in the states? We all know Japan’s taste for games is a bit… unique.

[I][URL="http://joystiq.com/game/final-fantasy-xiii"]Final Fantasy XIII[/URL][/I] launched exclusively on PlayStation 3 in Japan last December, beating the multiplatform English release by just under three months, and the local Xbox 360 version by a year. The Japanese Xbox 360 game, dubbed [I]Final Fantasy XIII Ultimate Hits International[/I], arrived on December 16th, bringing with it an English voiceover track, an “Easy” mode and a bonus book. According to launch week sales figures, Square Enix’s turnaround in supporting the Japanese 360 may have been overly optimistic.

Producer Yoshinori Kitase [URL="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/08/final-fantasy-xiii-ultimate-hits-international-confirmed-for-xbox-360-in-jap/"]told[/URL] Japanese mag [I]Famitsu[/I] in September that the redesigned Xbox 360 hardware had revitalized interest in a local edition of [I]Final Fantasy XIII[/I]. “We feel that there are … a lot of people in Japan who own nothing but 360s,” he said. “Thanks to the new system and such, the situation’s a lot different than it was in July 2008.”

In its first four days, [I]Final Fantasy XIII[/I] sold fewer than 22,579 copies — the cut-off point for that week’s top 20 sales as tracked by [URL="http://www.m-create.com/ranking/"]Media Create[/URL] — and landed in the 39th spot. It’s not an unsurprising outcome for a year-old title meeting a relatively small user base, but it raises an interesting question: Would Square have benefited more if it had launched its flagship property on both platforms last December, or was this tardy tradeoff its best shot at a small target?
