btw, you sound like you have backpacked across Japan previously. Care to share your story/tips/route?

check out hiroshima. when you are there, take a visit to the peace park at night, around 11pm. lots of kids come down there to play music, dance on the street and hang out. there's also a strip downtown, pretty sure it's a covered arcade, and at night when the shops close people come and hang out there too. i met some of the most incredible people in my life in hiroshima, and i heard some of the most amazing music out there on the street. the contemporary art museum there is also beautiful, way up on some mountain or hill thing. pretty awesome walk up there. and then of course, you have to visit miyajima. such a lovely island, wonderful place to go in the afternoon and beautiful when the sun sets.

kyoto isn't my favorite spot in japan, but if you're heading there you might want to do this hike called "the philosopher's walk" or something like that. i encountered many strange and interesting things on that walk! as someone previously stated, kyoto is all about the buses. seeing the downtown streets through bus windows, especially in the rain, is extraordinarily enchanting. there's also a good ryokan on the south side of the station, might want to look that up. also a popular spot for street dancing down there on the south side where tourists don't venture so much.

my advice is to just plan your trip around your interests! i'm really into music, so i usually planned my trips so that i'd be able to check out a lot of live houses, particularly the legendary ones. also, like i said before, the contrasts between urban/rural are pretty stunning. osaka is a great town if you like going a little crazy and staying out all night. girls will actually talk to you there without hesitation and the music scene is ridiculous. namba is sort of the focal point for all that. there was this building with all these tiny bars (i'm sure there are a ton of these around but whatever…), and i had one of the best nights of my life in one such place called the pink elephant. talk about feeling a sense of recognition. think evangelion posters next to velvet underground LPs in one room… yeah… sort of like my room. ah. anyways. there's so much to say about traveling in japan.

oh right, there’s this halfway decent hostel in osaka, located right in namba. believe it’s called go osaka. very close to the awesomeness!

as a side note, i have absolutely no experience living there, trying to live there or anything like that. i just go when i can save up enough money and i always expect to come home dead broke.

how much are train tickets? I dont mean the express non stop tokyo to kyoto long distance ones, I mean the regular commute trains people take to go over to the next town.

When I visited New York I stayed in Newark, and the train was $5 and like 30 minutes, I mean a train like that. I seem to have read most of those trains run for about 1000 Yen or so.?

not sure if this has already been mentioned, but you can get a JR train pass before you go to japan, and this will give you access to the shinkansen as well as the JR metro/subway lines (very helpful for getting around in tokyo). the neat thing is that once you have the pass you can avoid the regular lines and turnstiles and basically just flash the pass at a guard person and you’re through. the only problem is that the passes are expensive. i remember that a three-week pass was close to $500, so to make it worth your while it really depends on what kind of itinerary you are planning. you can look all of this up in your average guidebook to japan.

by the way, i would recommend starting north and traveling south. by the time you’re in kyushu you’ll surely have made it to heaven.

contrary to the notion that japan’s size would be a negative factor for backpacking, i think it’s actually a plus. the sudden contrasts between urban and rural landscapes are very compelling and give you a bifurcated experience that i found kept me fresh when things teetered on the edge of exhaustion.

youth hostels can be sketchy, mostly because a lot of them have inflexible rules (curfews, etc.). if you have the budget to shell out for slightly better accommodations i would recommend it. maybe cut the difference by spending nights in internet cafes or a denny’s.

We only have 2 in all of the city. One is in queens and the other was chinatown fair which is now in Williamsburg. Not sure if they changed the name with the move.

really only 2?!?!?! so the whole time i thought i was taking arcades in nyc for granted there were hardly any to begin with… chinatown fair is a great name. hopefully they didn't change it, even if it's in wburg now.

p.s. – i suddenly long for namba in osaka. so so much longing!

oooh i love chinatown. finding a spot there would be amazing. toys r us in times square sounds awesome too. might be passing thru 42nd street tomorrow evening, maybe give that a try if it gets late and messy enough. chelsea piers is kind of daunting. i’ve gone bowling over there and it was alright. saw some nice yachts no less.

One round consists of three songs, each one a minute or two long. So about 6 minutes each round. I had breaks in between rounds since I was playing with friends, but the last few rounds I went HARD on the machine and did stuff on heavy mode/ expert.

i want to try this some night when the circumstances are right. where’s a good arcade in nyc? i feel like i’ve been asking this question to the void for the past 5 years and consequently never received a good answer.

i don’t know, but i have this dream where hatsune miku walks all over me wearing high heels and even though it hurts it feels ridiculously good, especially when she steps on my face. it’s in a virtual setting where it’s programmed to feel good, i guess. wowaka’s music is usually the soundtrack. the fast stuff.

unpack that and i think you can see some of my general fetishes…
