See, way I see it, for the most part of your life you've been living vicariously through some characters in an imaginary world, and this makes you see life in some fancy anime glasses where everything works out in the end, and all the idealized things are really amped up to 11 even though the protagonist isn't really doing anything for it.

Then you hop down the plane in Japan and you see life as it really is: dull, drab, and everyone having their own personal lives and everything doesn't revolve around you or your wants anymore.

This is why I feel a sense of disgust when I see otakus. They're so encased in their perfect anime worlds with their waifus and figmas and 2D pantyshots that they're neglecting that it's just supposed to be a hobby and should [i]never[/i] encompass their lives. I am especially disgusted at people in their late teens/early 20's who still think like this. That's supposed to be the time when you put on your game face and you face life and say "Okay, let's do this. Carpe diem and see where the wind takes me!" Instead they're cooped up in their rooms downloading the latest moeblob shit and celebrating stupid anime character birthdays and arguing every day in anime forums about who's the best loli out there.

Sadly, I was exactly like that 7 years ago. I lived my life through anime. I download the latest shonen shows out there regardless of the stupidity of the plot. Extra points if it offers gratuitous amounts of fanservice. I even bought non-prescription reading glasses despite having perfect vision BECAUSE I thought pushing them up the bridge of my nose makes me look "sugoi!" and have girls fall for me (oh God, thinking about it now, I wish I could go back and smack my younger self for this embarrassing shit). I try to put on a lone wolf aura thinking that such aloof personality will attract people to me.

It's all a fucking joke. Once I started working in an international corporate company and was forced to interact with people in various stations, I started to see that life isn't some fucking "slice of life" where people always gather at the smallest occasion. Friends cannot come, events get in the way, and there's always money to be made. You can't just slap on some glasses and put on an aloof persona to be cool. You have to go out, work out, make yourself presentable, and be eloquent to make your point across and be respected and noticed by others in the grand stage. I've moved on since then and while I still occasionally watch anime, I only see it as just something to pass the time when I want me-time. And even that's taken a backseat to video games, which is still something I partake in quite regularly. Now, I'm enjoying life in ways an anime character could never hope to do. Next month, me and my friends are going to Africa to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. It's going to be the first time I'm gonna attempt mountain climbing and it's scaring me to hell and at the same time I can't fucking wait for it. Three of my friends are expert mountaineers and I know I'm just gonna be having a blast.

You're scared because you've been an otaku all your life and when you realized that real life isn't like anime, you're afraid that what you've been living for so far is fake and it's all a waste. I can't say if it is or not. It will depend on how you look at it. For me, I thought it was a good life lesson and at the very least, it gave me a foil to see what I could've become if I stuck with being an otaku. If I let anime dominate my life, it would've held me back and I wouldn't be living this great life I am now.

Stop comparing your life to an anime. Even more importantly, don't try to live your life as if it's one. It's not. Don't expect it to be like K-On, as you mentioned, where everyone's on common interests all the time. Anime is boring. Once you realize that there's absolutely no limit to what you can do with your life, you'll wonder why you've been stuck in one hobby for so long. Don't listen to the idiots who tell you to be content with a life of liking anime for as long as you live; they're trying to drag you down with them in the hopes that someone else is living a pathetic life as they are.
