Personally, I'd like to think that both of my threads which got closed (which we all knew would get closed) had a point. One was to remark on the apparent low of a recent topic, and to confirm that others were of the same opinion. If nobody was of that opinion, I'd realize that I was the lone believer. The other was simply for fun, as are all threads of a non-scholarly point. Since neither were offensive in nature or spam/profiteering, and I was told they were closed since they were pointless, I simply wonder what merits a point, and what the need to close a pointless thread is if people chose to participate in it. This is supposed to be entertaining, after all.

So what gives a topic a point?

Talking about lack of content on the forums/opinions on the fact of having an opinion constitutes as pointless. Make a topic that has substance and we can all bitch at each other over it.

Generally, I'm of the opinion that having a point makes a topic have a point. Neither of the threads you bring up had much of a point to them.
Perhaps there was something to discuss about the underlying issue. However, you didn't bring anything to the table, and as a result, people were disinterested.
If there was a point or a reason behind those two threads, then that'd be great. But, you didn't bring up anything meaningful, post anything informative or interesting, or really do much of anything. Thus, those threads had no point.

Ah. I guess that'd be the communication difference. I don't like to just bitch about things, because if I'm the minority I'm fine with respecting that. So I post witty remarks out to see if anybody agrees. But still, I leave my question about the need to close a thread simply because it has no point, if people are entertaining themselves in it.

I'm assuming the mods want it all within designated threads instead of "Dicking Around Thread 1" "The Ultimate Dicking Around Thread" "HEY-Let's Dick Around Thread" "Dicking About Thread" "University of Dicking Around", etc.

Tbh, if you want to discuss the lack of discussion, it would probably work in some convoluted way. But you're aiming too low. If you make a thread knowing it's going to be closed. You know it, everyone knows it, why wouldn't it be closed? If however, you write what you wanna say in a way that fosters discussion and thought, that would be fine. Otherwise, you end up with a thread where people just go to post reaction images or talk about something else entirely which can be done elsewhere.

That Post Pictures Thread, which I might add, isn't even what the title says, so the point of that thread is that it's an absolute derail. And if we wanted a semblance of order, shouldn't we make it an organized forum instead of a free board? I mean, this IS Sancom. Why not just let the strongest or most entertaining derails stay current, and the nons just die out? I feel pretty stymied by one thread continuing and another getting killed just because.

Let's get a mod in here and let them express their opinion.

And I actually just wanted to talk with people on the same wavelength as me, which I was doing. Seemed like some relatively nice people had made their way in. And the only reason I knew it'd get closed is because complaint threads always get closed.
Posted 5 years ago # -
it's because people post "inb4close" comments :)
PS: try to make a troll thread you'll see it will live long and prosper...
Posted 5 years ago # -
lol Yeah, I'm not a total troll fan, just a heckler. And it's gotta be witty. And we all know that criticism threads get closed. The only time I've seen a forum care about opinions is when they're asked for.
Posted 5 years ago # -
If you actually have something to complain about, then complain away. There's nothing that says you can't.
But pointless threads are pointless. You made two threads about people making worthless threads. If you're gonna complain about that, then why do it yourself?
If you want, make an argument for your thread and I will consider re-opening it.

Well, the opinions one was relatively pointless, just made in good fun as a spin-off from my main thread, which stated its point: Having a main page topic about the opinions expressed in another main page topic's a noticeable low point.
Threads, I could care less about people making worthless ones. I've been on enough forums to know that people are going to make threads I could care less about. I don't personally believe in closing them just for being worthless to one or most people. Those threads work their ways out of the system. Offensive, harassing, or possibly exploitive threads really deserve closed, imo.

Well, I'm off to work having just woken up, but this is one of the things that aggravates me a bit. I was told that I could rebut the closing of my threads, I commented on it, and then there was never any follow-up. It was simply a hollow statement as far as I can tell.

So you don't care about the opinion one. Good.
You do realize that you made a topic about a topic about a topic don't you? If you find it to be such a low point, why are you reinforcing it? You could've made your point within the thread in question. And making the "opinion thread" right after, kinda voids your point. Don't go around complaining about other peoples posting practices, and then doing the same thing.alex251 said:

well...That one is not within my control. I agree that thread was closed rather rashly. Fyi, the thread was not closed because it was a suggestion/criticism. It was closed because it was derailed to the point that the original purpose of the thread was deemed lost. Again, it was not my decision so don't complain to me about it.
