   Let me first start off by saying CONSOLE CONSOLE CONSOLE!! PC gamers are not real gamers and PC's are not consoles.

   That being said if you could create the ultimate gaming console what would you want it to be capable of doing and what types of games would you want on it?

   For me it would have to be put out by sega. i would want it completely backwards compatible with all former sega games. Master system/ Genesis/CD/32X/Saturn/Dreamcast. DSL ready, built in hard drive for saves but also uses updated VMU's so you can trade saves and characters and all kinds of other things. Component and HDMI hook ups. the controlers MUST be arcade sticks, but you could also buy regular controlers/light guns/ whatever if needed.

   clearly i want this system to be focused on Fighting games and competition. with a dash of retro and arcade fun. well, that's my dream what's yours?

   Idk if you're motive for saying this is to avoid "pc rulez" fucktards or to provoke them. Anywho, if you say so, then I'll go with PSP and game boy color.

   Best arcade would be rhythm ones like djmax and shoot em up. Who finished all House of the Dead's? Im dying to finish 4 but got no time for that now unlike back when I was a mall rat.

   Your right, PC's are not consoles, as consoles are machines that are build to a set spec and all games must be compatible with said spec whereas a no two pcs are the same and can be imporoved to play better games meaning developers don't reach a bottleneck in the hardware as is already happening with the console market.
   Also, PC's are actually useful when you need to get that essay written.
   Also, the PC is backwards compatable with every game from the last generation backwards.

   Although, the NES was the perfect console, I don't know why they ever bothered making new consoles after that.

   Actually its pretty much all the requirements.

   Unless you want to play small server based rpg like NWN.

   to avoide. there's always someone ranting about how PC's are the ultimate gaming machines, then 5 minutes later bitching about patches and having to update hardware and blah blah blah.

   anyway this thread is about what YOU personally would want in a gaming console. not what you think is the ultimate console that already exists.

    But if you want a console, get an Xbox 360. Let's see, Genesis and Dreamcast games available on XBLA, Hori arcade sticks available, and for fighting games there's Virtua Fighter5, Dead or Alive 4, Soul Calibur 4, (Super) Street Fighter 2 and 4, Tekken 6, various King of Fighters, Guilty Gear, BlazeBlu, Marvel vs Capcom 2 and 3, that's all I can think of for now.

    or a PS3 and get the exact same games. however, i'm one of those weird creepy guys who actually enjoys having a game i can hold in my hands as opposed to just a digital copy. XBL and PSN offer many old games but not EVERYTHING and thats what i want in a console, access to everything i loved playing as a kid as well as any old games i may have never played before.

    Hmm dream console, huh? Maybe something that would revolutionize gaming but not with how Wii tries to do it. Of course controllers should still be the medium. Maybe they should focus more on the specs and the gameplay.

    But the way I see the trending of consoles, it is inevitable that they are turning into PC's more and more. Well what would you expect with a machine that is based on PC architecture and consumers trying to demand more features like online networking which is one of the strengths of PC's? And as technology progresses, the desire to consolidate those that satisfy our wants into one is increasing.

    Btw, I define PC's here as all computers. Meaning if it has a mobo or a processor it is a computer. So technically in relation with my definition, all consoles are computers. But I know that is not what you mean by PC's. Gah!! I don't want to turn this into a tl;dr. I'll end here.

    true, there are PC aspects in game consoles however consoles are superior in that you don't have to constantly upgrade internal hardware to be able to play. once you have the console that's it, you're good to go.

    There was a film about that.

    Anyway, the AI was that good that the game world was pretty much a real world where the player would log on, taking control of his avatar.
    One guys player starts murdering or something, and the AI eventually discovers that hes an AI inside a game.

    PS9. Dunno if anyone remembers the commercial but shortly after the PS2 launched sony put out a commercial with futuristic gaming where it was much like the matrix. it was basically a slap in the face to competitors who think sony wont last.

    No Atom cpus as they'll kill the battery life and Atom plus Ion would make it expensive.

    Embedded Linux OS
    Official support for home brew and third party software.
    Dual USB ports.
    Full Bluetooth.
    micro projector addon.
    Touch Screen.
    PSP style D pad
    accelerometer.
    Slider KB.

    Dream console
    Cell processor or something power 6 based.
    Ram base 2GB but upgradable to 4GB or more.
    Graphics geforce 400 series or ATI R700 series based.
    Linux support.
    4 USB 2.0 and 2 USB 3.0 ports.
    Backwards compatible with previous generation console.
    Official home brew or at least an easily upgradable Mozilla based browser.
    Sony should have had the mozilla group or google make a browser for them.
    Media card reader.
    XBMC or Boxee for media playback.
    User serviceable mass storage and support for standard PC drives.
    Support for hardrive backup of game disks.
