Only 1.7% of sites blocked by Scandinavia's "child-porn" filters are actually CP

  1. http://www.boingboing.net/2010/09/30/only-17-of-sites-blo.html

So, it seems that Danish and Swedish governments are using CP bans to block websites that don't contain CP. IS anyone else not surprised at all? And is anyone else wondering how many non-CP sites that authorities in other countries are blocking for CP or planning to block that don't have any CP in them?

If you look at the .pdf, the stats aren't as bad as they seem; most of the blocked sites that don't contain CP are sites that don't actually exist or that don't have anything in them at all, but there are still quite a few legal sites that are being blocked.

Even the fact that a lot of the non-CP sites don't exist is worrying in its own way; it means that the authorities aren't doing much checking up on the sites they blacklist. Maybe this is all actually due to incompetence rather than malice? (of course, if this happened in the UK, I'd immediately suspect malice).

  4. If I recall they once banned a site about Bonsai trees since they figured that it was somehow related to CP...

I really do wonder how good they are at checking what they block!

If they do a simple proxy should do the trick, al tough that would lead to slower page loads...

I don't think they actually "check" it...personally. They probably just run some crappy keyword search and then filter it.

Bonsai trees are the worst kinds of pedophiles. They're out there to get our children and we don't know what they are thinking.

  7. That's always the case with these CP filters.

  9. something funny you can google the names of those blocked sites and check yourself. One question is how come these sites are still up? can't they track down the server and arrest the operator?

I was wondering about this as well. But if that's the case, internet censorship might actually work counterproductive in that it decreases the traffic to such sites which might otherwise serve as leads to find paedophiles.

Consider than this is Sweden/Denmark I think they quite simple won't bother if the server happens to be outside these countries, since it would be allot more bothersome for them to do that if they aren't in their respective country.

Might not make much sense, but it made me think of a certain Swedish forum that is, since 2 years back, illegal in Sweden so they moved the server to another country and all of suddenly nothing happened with the site... but it was still illegal to read on the forums, sort of.

Welcome to the modern world man. A guy was arrested here in the U.S. once for reading pure text stories about kids doing it.

Appears that they have taken that law back now, either that or the forum deleted the section they deemed illegal... but I doubt they did.

Something tells me that they noticed that it went against the nifty little Freedom of speech law we got here, or perhaps they "eluded" that law until someone pointed it out...

I doubt that as seeing the book Lolita is totally legal. Or he was only arrested for child pornography but the charges didn't stick.

Both pure text and drawn images are included in Swedens CP law. A pr0n pic of a 24-year-old who looks like he/she's 17 is CP as well. Heck, it might be CP just because he/she dresses like someone who's 17 or under.

I swear, it looks like Swedens CP law is an attept at stopping people from looking at any kind of pr0n for fear of being caught looking at non-CP CP.

But if it can be implied as art its for some reason legal!
(Not that long ago it was some... odd art photo show off, apparently there was an erotic picture of a under age girl but nothing could be done about that since it was "art"... So, I wonder what you need to classify stuffs here as art? Seeing a drawn stuffs aren't art for some reason!)
