Copyright troll law firm pwnt

  1. I'm sure some of you know about this incident already, but those who don't might find it amusing.

Over the past few years, it's been common here in Britannia (and Germany, I've heard) for dodgy law firms to engage in borderline scamming by sending letters to thousands of people demanding money in compensation for illegally downloading shit and threatening them with legal action if they don't pay up. It doesn't matter whether these people are innocent; many of them will pay the settlement because they're scared of the time and cost of defending themselves in court, even if they know they are innocent. One elderly couple who didn't even know how to download was accused of "stealing" a film named "Army Fuckers" and told to pay £500 as an out-of-court settlement.

Last night, one of these law firms (ACS:Law) got raped. They suffered a ddos attack (no prizes for guessing who organised it) and somehow hundreds of MBs of emails were made public. They might even be in violation of the UK Data Protection Act.

Hopefully, this will make national news and the general public will be made aware of this scam, making it much harder for firms to do this in the future. Well, we live in hope...

I find it hard to imagine that it'll make international news. But wow, I'm impressed. That's some good work they did. Is it that easy to steal your way into a company's e-mails though? I'm a bit surprised they actually managed to do that.

It was just a stroke of luck that enabeled them to get the data. The idiots who managed the site or w/e left a backup available for anyone to get.

A lot of people are very easily scared by legal threats and don't know how to defend themselves against this kind of bullshit. This isn't the US, people aren't used to getting sued here (although it's starting to go that way...)

And remember, he sent out tens of thousands of letters a time, sometimes even to people in their 60s and 70s; it's inevitable that a decent number of people wouldn't have the wherewithal to deal with the situation. Even if it was only one in a hundred who payed up, that's still a huge profit.

He's also a lawyer; he did what he did in such a way that he wasn't actually breaking any laws. Well, he wasn't breaking any laws until the webmaster fucked up and left a load of people's private data visible for all to see.
