FWI, they all died. It's called an Ant Death Spiral (circular mill?) and it is a very depressing/hilarious glitch in the navigational systems of army ants.
The process is not entirely understood.

That was a good manga. The movie was so lazy. Best thing about it was:
Look at them, following each other mindlessly. They remind me of humans.
hmmm maybe magnetic? or is it chemical?
i could see one ant having a stroke and spraying out too much "follow" chemical and causing this.
That's pretty cool.

I just researched it a bit.
Apparently, an ant loses its way after exploring and starts following another ant to find its way back. However, the ant ends up following the ant that's following it. Then you bring this small circle close to the entrance of the ant hill and all the other ants join in, and then they all die after marching for days.

Too bad insects don't show any form of personality. One of them surely would have said "I'm fucking hungry, I'm out."

I hear it's sometimes possible to instigate this in a lab using a simple cylinder, so it's more likely to be a chemical thing.
Here's my info-

http://www.buzzhunt.co.uk/2009/07/15/ants-spiral-of-death/
(the second one is rather terribly written, but it has info the other doesn't.)
EDIT: Peter sounds like he already knows more than these folks. I believe his answer.

Actually wanted to try the "Let's all stand on one side of the elevator!" thing with some friends to see this first hand.
I've always thought that an elevator is a nice place for psychological pranks. The fact that it's a small closed space that you have to share with others while it moves just seems like it'll add to the drama. It'd be nice to just stand in a corner, facing the corner, saying nothing, not moving a muscle, and see whether people feel uncomfortable.
...Wait, if you're facing the wall, you can't see whether people get uncomfortable.
Well, damn.

Wow... So they just skipped that car when checking the lifts? That's not so nice...
If the lights had went off, he may have gone nuts.
I am amazed by both the fact of the ants, and the fact that the person in the lift didn't pee onces in those 41 hours. If this was the sims, it would have been a pool by now.

He probably did pee, when he kept opening the doors he probably peed off the side but the tape was going so fast you couldn't see the 30 seconds-1 minute of him peeping.

You might be right...
I saw a web redemption of this on Tosh.0 a while back and I the more I try to think back, the more I remember him saying something along those lines!
Ooooooor maybe I'm delusional and like to start rumors. Who can say really?
