SILVER SPRING, Md. — Montgomery County police say a gunman has entered the Discovery Communications building in Silver Spring, Md. and has taken at least one person hostage.A person inside the building told The Associated Press says the man had something strapped to his chest and has hostages. The person refused to be identified, saying people inside have been told not to speak to the media.
Police Cpl. Dan Friz said the building in Silver Spring, Md., was on lockdown but he could not confirm gunshots were fired as a Discovery employee had told ABC television.
He said a tactical team was trying to get in touch with the gunman, who is being monitored on closed circuit TV.
The "tactical team has put together a plan for dealing with this individual," Friz told ABC 7 News.
NBC News reported that employees from the 8th and 9th floors had been evacuated and were now about a block away from the building.
The website tbd.com was reporting that a day care center in the building had been evacuated and the 100 children were safe at a nearby McDonald's restaurant.
Friz was unable to confirm reports that multiple shots have been fired, but he said no shots had been fired by police as of 1:40p.m. Discovery Communications said it reaches 1.5 billion subscribers in more than 180 countries with the Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Science Channel and Planet Green networks.
Some updates since then: The man, an Asian American, is a former employee of Discovery, and Discovery has had recent threats against their airing of "Whale Wars", which the threats say "sponsor eco-terrorism"
