Old Mechas Design vs New Mechas design

  1. As simple as the tittle says... which kind of design for mechas do you like better?

Personally I love the old school designs like Mazinger Z and such, the designs that Go Nagai did make the robots to have certain personality and you could tell then apart really easily! And you even can feel attached emotionally to those robots

Personally i think that nowadays the Mechas don't look too different from one to another... I mean I can't tell apart a mech from Code Geass from a mech from a gundam. . . Yeah I know that if you watch the shows is easy.

But you don't have to watch Mazinger Z or Voltron to tell then apart from other mechas. . .

But that's just my PERSONAL opinion. . .

So what do you guys think ?

  2. I personally am a general mecha fan but i see your point. HOWEVER your comparing apples to oranges. Go nagai and the older ones you mention are SUPER ROBOTS while gundam and code geass style mechas are REAL ROBOTS. Big difference see even as over the top as some of code geasses are they still seem to fit the real robot genre while things like say Mazinger or more recently goddannar and gravion are super robots overpowered walking death machines with enough power to nuke the universe and i think that's the difference you mean. I mean tell me you couldn't identify a mech from rahxephon or gravion from their sillhouette alone. Now try it with a regular massproduction unit from say gundam or code geass. It can be done but not as easily. It's cause super robots are MEANT to stand out and be so identifiable unlike real robots who are meant to be "just one of the guys".

  3. Sorrior makes a good point at that. Though personally I think that overall, animators could be a little more creative with the styles of a "mass-production" unit. At any rate, overall I like the general style of mechs from the 90's. Although I would probably be more accurate in saying that I like mechs that have biological elements such as the ones from Evangelion and RahXephon. Though I fear the idea being overused.

On a similar subject, what character designs do you prefer as well? Like my older mecha I like late 80's and early 90's for character design the best.

  4. Thx for agreeing with me and yeah 80s and 90s had GREAT animation styles. I belive my mom prefers them as well actually. More life and better done that in say the 70s and certainly than now.

  5. I think that the newer ones are better.

Actually, anything is fine as long as it performs well during battle.

  6. Big fan of the vintage mech designs some good ol' Osamu Tezuka stuff and other classic works like Testujin-28. Sometimes the more modern designs try to hard but Yoji Shinkawa's designs for Zone of the Enders always impressed.

The more 'realistic'designs you see in front mission or metal gear solid are also cool and a bit refreshing.

I agree with OP the more vintage designs had more character and more personality the newer designs are trying too hard to be cool or something.

  8. Well I was into Robotech aka Macross, Gaiking and some others shows that use to be shown on Telemondo.

  9. Oh duh! How could I forget Robotech? I always really enjoyed their mech design, not to mention how it transformed. The vintage mechs certainly have style. Maybe it's like cars in a way? Although for newer anime I like the mechs of Eureka 7. They're somewhat generic in appearance but the idea of making them sky-surf was an awesome idea.

On a side note: I understand that Robotech is a butchered version of its original form as Macross. Though I first came across it as a series of novels, which with no previous knowledge of the show, turned out to be really good. So, for me the books are the first thing that springs to mind whenever someone mentions Robotech/Macross.

  11. I also like some newer designs too, like GunXsword... dude I totally love those!! also I prefer the style of characters from the 90s, or just styles that have detail and have a different style.

I really dislike the newer stuff in which the guys looks really metrosexual and the girls with really simple detail... almost no nose at all! ( I know that not all the styles are like that nowadays, but that's popular now. . . )

  12. Here are some pictures from my aforementioned series. For being such a big mech fan I really should check out some Gundam stuff. But I tend to be really picky with mech anime so a lot of that could be hit and miss.

  13. What I mean by realistic designs are designs you can picture happening irl in the near future.

  14. I don't know, the first one just looks like your average mecha. . . the one from Metal Gear. . . well who knows. . .

Maybe the concept of a Huge mecha is something dumb. . . like its using to much technology in something that maybe would be very fragile. . .

Maybe personal armors is something more like it to happen than a huge mecha

  17. Hollywood certainly seems pretty attached to the idea of a personal armour style mech. Honestly, that's the most likely evolution of mechs in RL in my opinion. American media actually has some pretty reasonable ideas as far as ideas for functioning mechs go. Take some of Starship troopers for example, or for a more recent example some of Starcraft's designs. The animatrix also provided some great artwork in one of their episodes.

What are people's thoughts on the 'mechs' from Escaflowne?

Truth be told when i first saw gundam wing being advertised on cartoon network i thought they work like the Guymelefs. But as i said before this topic seems more about how we've been getting more real robot rather than super robot. But overall i liked the escaflowne designs.

Oh and for mechs in rl i DO belive they will exist but i also believe first gen rl mechs will be SHIT and mainly used for scare tactics. However look at them this way when the tank and airplane were first introduced into combat everyone was saying how they would NEVER work how they were USELESS and OVERLY COMPLICATED. If you'll see the capped words you'll not that is what people say about rl mechs. Well could you imagine a country going to war without a tank or pack of planes anymore? I doubt it, So yeah they'll happen but they will be shit at first but by the time we blow ourselves up i bet even the XX, OO raiser and wing zero would be shitting their pants.

  20. I don't know, PERSONALLY i think that the mech from Escaflowne looks like a robot that they added as much stuff as they could just to make it look cooler... but the details are like all over the place TO ME.

Just not a big fan. . . ( I know that the thing has a lot of forms but this is the most common when we are talking about Escaflowne... I think )
