You know, I don't think I'd ever download a copy of a comic book that I like. Hell, as a collector I've paid hundreds of dollars for a particularly good series. However, I've downloaded my fair share of scanslations. I wonder what the difference is for me. Is it the impatience at having to wait to find out what happens? I honestly find myself viewing each episode of most manga just as a "what happens next" and not of any full value. There have been exceptions, such as Alchemist. Now, THAT I'd probably pay for if it's not stupid priced and is good quality. I also thing that I'd rather pay $4~5 for a full color comic with a nice cover than $10+ for a book that after a few years will be turning yellow. I wonder if the people that are upset at us for downloading know that in order to actually purchase any of this stuff, we basically have to let anybody involved in the process rape our wallet.

What about buying vampire bund it has an official release ya know and most of the "scanlators" online are just copying the official version.

Well, imo that's blatant piracy. And yeah, as for Bleach or Naruto I was being facetious there. Oh, and that STILL doesn't justify charging $10 a pop for that kinda paper.

I don't know what graphic novels you're getting because they're 15+ over here,
as for mangas - they're too much at 10 dollars a piece, granted they provide more story for your buck.Posted 5 years ago # -

It used to max at 12 IF THAT i can actually chart the increase through my negima volumes by looking at the prices on the back.

I try to buy them on the cheap at amazon for around 5.50 bucks a book,
but the problem is that shipping usually costs around 3.99 :'|Posted 5 years ago # -
I used to buy comics when they were 50 cents, 60, 75...then during the big Comics boom of the early 90's $1.00 seemed fair. After all you had the birth of Image, Top Cow, and various independents with gorgeous books & artwork (that were $2 & $3)- then by 2000 ALL Comics were hovering around $2.... then I asked myself Do really care about "Green Lantern" or the Justice League...I started only buy books I knew I HAD to have based on character interest.
I was laid off for about a year in late 2001 and I realized I had no interest in BUYING 'New' comics so I instead sold back my OLD comics because I could get more money in "Trade" if I bought new comics than if I sold them outright....I did that for about 6 months and realized - I no longer cared - the makers seemed to just make books to make books. I cashed in every comic I owned left and had toke that $120 bucks to a Strip club.
In 2003 I got into Anime, and used to buy it at "Best Buy" or Netflicks....then when the Dub market started 'drying up' (the Economy?) I switched to SUBS and FREE downloads.
I now watch 5 times as much Anime and pay virtually NOTHING! Comics aren't even Worth downloading for FREE! as they've become too "Politically Correct", Preachy, and are written by Social Justice Merchants as opposed to appealing to a males baser interests
"High School of the Dead" Episode #7 was Cooler than EVERY Top Cow & Image Book I've ever read.

Yeah, they have some titles the comic's on Bittorrent you be surprise what they got.

I don’t like american comics, mainly because they are american.
That and the art does not appeal at all.
Its also hard to read comics, since you read them backwards.

I'm more inclined to actually buy American comics because of the availability and quality of it. With the exception of BERSERK it's very hit and miss that I can start and get an entire manga series. I started two series, Love Hina and Video Girl AI and I can't even find the books at big retailers like Borders and Barnes&Noble anymore. Not to mention the problem with yellowing pages mentioned above.
I get 'The Walking Dead' for $13 each roughly on glossy paper, I bought the entire compilation of BONE for $40, an the comic compilations of 'Flight' run $25 but are on glossy paper and in full colour! The difference in quality can be seen at a glance and they are almost always in stock.
It seems a little hypocritical to be complaining about price while buying (the occasional) comic for more than a manga. But then I think back to some of my manga that are yellowing because I left them on a table the got afternoon sun for a day or two.

From what I've seen most people would rather buy expensive figurines or hundreds of dollars worth of fabric for cosplay rather than a manga.
Except for my Akira manga, I own very little. I don't know if they are worth anything but it has a lot of sentimental value for me.

LOL yeah i've noticed that. If you look at the otaku purchase thread you'll see hundreds to thousands of dollars worth of anime and manga i've ordered/bought in town while pretty much everyone else has been ordering figma.

A very common consumer habit amongst us.
Making an argument about price is difficult since none of us know how much it costs to produce a manga in the US. Things likes licensing cost, labor, printing, maybe advertising added with mark-up likely come into play, but to say exactly how much is largely unknown. If you think about it though, the market of anime and manga overseas doesn't hold a candle to one in it's native land. Practically everyone in Japan reads manga, while here manga is read mainly by a small hardcore group. Because manga is niche and a luxury item overseas , it makes sense for it to be more expensive so companies can be profitable- which is difficult as of late.
Wallets getting raped should not be a concern in a hobby. No one should ever expect to be saving money in this. Also, are wallets really being raeped? It's not like shelling out $10 once in a while will put you in the poor house. You make it sound like it's impossible to buy a volume of Monster a week and maintain a savings account. Furthermore you're thinking too much about the product itself. When purchasing manga, it's not only about the product, you're making an investment.
Industry-wise, you give the industry more incentive to license and release more manga. One argument many like to throw out is that all manga is naruto and bleach. Which is untrue, if you live in America or anywhere else on this planet... but why not buy naruto and bleach if they indeed are the only the titles available? It would give them the incentive to release more things out. Probably not everything, but it's something. And you support it enough, in time, you might get everything and more.
Now, I could go on and on about this, but I'll end this here....

Why shouldn't one worry about price where their hobby is concerned? For many people, there just isn't a whole lot of money to spend on personal prospects for a variety of reasons so they want their money to go as far as possible. While $10 here and there isn't that much in the short term, manga usually comes in series lengths of at least 10 volumes, easily costing you over $100 once tax is taken into account. Even then it is unlikely to net as many hours of enjoyment as a box set of similar price. Then there are books which cost less and provide tend to provide more 'content' in terms of story.
It's a tough situation for manga fans who want to support efforts in their country.
