Endings that moved you and why?

  1. =======================================================================
    WARNING:

This thread may and probably will contain spoilers to whichever animes, video games, movies, or mangas hereafter mentioned.

    =======================================================================

It could be said of many of us that in our early youth we were all much more emotional than most of us today in our adolescent to early adult years. For myself, I discovered the ability to believe in a story and care for the characters of my books, games, cartoons, etc. And so after a particularly good book or movie or what have you I would have that breif sense of finality. That humming throb of blaringly loud silence that disconnected me from the world I had just adventured through. For the longest time it bore within me a sense of fear in regards to endings.

Now, as I have grown and matured, I realize the feeling of being moved by a good ending. And so I ask this community:

What games did you play? What books or mangas did you read? What cartoon, movie, or anime did you watch that drew you into its world and moved you to emotion or spurred you to change in the end?

Which stories touched you and why?

  2. The ending of Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal is almost perfect. Kenshin's first love sacrificed herself to save him and it almost made me drop my manly tears.

Grave of the fireflies also have a sad and touching ending. The scene that the protagonist was cremating her deceased sister deeply moved me.

There are too many anime that have touching endings..ninja scroll, Basilisk etc. Can't list them all.

  3. The ending of Persona 3 touched me a lot. At first I thought the MC was going to die after sealing Nix, which is humanity's sin. He doesn't die there though, so I was kinda glad, the game then skips three months later, and it brings up something about you being tired or something. That was a hint for later but I just skipped that, thinking it wasn't anything important. And those days are easily the most memorable ones, you get to hang out with everyone you max social link'd. It truly is a great sight, especially if you've spent 100+ hours playing this game and just spending time with each of these characters throughout the year and getting to know their personalities, their problems, helping them out, and forming genuine bonds with them. Knowing this'll be your last day with them, that itself was almost tearjerking, spending time with them for the last time. I dunno, maybe I got too attached to the game. And I think the next day, you get the message telling you you're tired again, and then there's this closing ceremony at your school. You feel like you have a headache, so you go upstairs. Then you lie down on Aigis' lap on the roof, and you close your eyes to take a little rest. Everyone of your teammates then go up to the roof to find you. I still didn't know shit about what was happening, until after the cutscene.

It turns out you essentially died when you sealed Nix, but before you went to fight him, you made a promise with your teammates that you would all be there for the closing ceremony, together. So through that promise, somehow, you've managed to stay alive until you've fulfilled your promise. And you really get the feeling that the MC is you, you spent 100+ hours as him, making every decision he does and everything he says. Needless to say, manly tears were formed.

    ^This.

    Also, My Sister's Keeper.

The book. I haven't seen the movie yet.

I don't want to say much since I'll be spoiling it, but it really changed my perspective on a lot of issues, especially those related to ethics.

Same here for this one. It was very sad. And...can't think of anything else. Huh, that must be it then.

    that was indeed moving T.T
also the qoutes of most of the arcana during the avatar battle did reflect some on humanity as well.

  10. The H-game Wanko to Kurasou, during the Risa route when Mikan went missing, i was so into the game that it make me so sad i cried buckets.
It was my first H-game, but it wasn't because of that i cried, in fact a lot of players admit they got teary or cried during that scene. Everything in the game was just so perfectly done and placed.

The anime Clannad Afterstory, during the scene when Tomoya finally went to see his father, when Tomoya tell his dad he had done enough, and his dad just stare blankly in front of him and ask "had i done enough?" I cried because i can imagine being in their shoes and can somehow relate to it.

Those were the only 2 times i was so moved i cry over something fictional. : (

    WPE

    The End of Evangelion.

I was undergoing therapy at the time for various mental health issues I have. After making the impossibly stupid decision of watching questionable content while undergoing treatment for psychological disorders, I ended up being institutionalized for a few months.

The post-ironic existentialism caused me to have a breakdown.

So I guess I could say anime has literally moved me.

  12. End of:
    Blood+
    Last Exile
    Death Note
    Neverwinter Nights
Kafka on the Shore, Hardboiled Wonderland, Norwegian Wood (books by Haruki Murakami)

    and....
    a number of movies

Can't be bothered to elaborate here....I think I have done so countless times in the past...

I feel ya on Clannad, that one made me cry. Elfen Lied, Ayashi no Ceres, Honey and Clover, Tayutama, Shuffle, among many more moved me.

  14. Agreed on the Persona3 end.

The ending to Final Fantasy 7 Crisis Core made me pretty emotional.
The whole ending sequence was pretty moving. As the dwm malfunctions and show's flashes of Zack's memories. And then it gets stuck on aerith at the end. Then he gets brutally shot in the face. And aerith senses something wrong. Then cue the song that compliments the scene perfectly. And what really gets me is when he asks "did I become a hero" or something along those lines.

Both the manga and anime for Chrono Crusade was sad. I'm pretty tired, so maybe I'll elaborate on that one some other time(probably not).

  16. My turn I suppose. ^_^

The first Anime that really got to me was the 26 episode series called Gungrave. For me, it held alot of particular sentimentalities that scored close to home; How Brandon and Harry were friends from childhood. They grew up on the streets together, moved up the ladder of the mafia organization together. After the overall story of friendship, brotherhood, love and betrayal, Brandon and Harry have a final stand at the crumbling ruins of what was once their street gang's home.

Battered and dying, the two friends decide it is time to go home and leave the world behind. The scene where they point their guns at one another literally stung my eyes. And after the credits, when it shows them as kids and how they met it gave me the sense that everything that happened to them was fate and that no matter what they were destined to come back together as friends. Shit was beautiful, man.

Aww, dude. That sounds touching. Yeah, Gungrave is now definitely added to my "to watch" list.

  19. Endings that moved me? hmm.. I'll probly just mention the tearjerking ones I've watched.

    CLANNAD
    CLANNAD ~after story~
    Ef ~a tale of memories~
    sola

These are the only anime wherein water actually ran down my face.
There are ones that got my eyes watery, and gave me a light while heavy feeling though.

I have to disagree to some posts above.

Angel Beats.. It was awesome. I tried, but I just didn't feel it.

Death Note.. The ending left me heavy. It was seriously an awesome anime. The scene with Misa on top of the building? hah..... but I can't even compare it with the four anime I mentioned above.

Elfen Lied.. I watched it again just recently. And I concluded that it had poor replayability :/ Because of this, I don't clearly remember how I felt the first time I watched it.

I was moved by the ending of Baten Kaitos. I was quite young when I played it though, so that might have influenced things. I recently started playing the game and realized how horrible it is. I don't recommend it to anyone.
