  1. Personally I think forcing manga sites to shut down is a stupid idea since it won't actually help push sales of the actual manga.

I read comics online, and I only purchase those that I really like. If I haven't read it online in the first place, I most likely wouldn't even have bought them. Now I am making assumptions here, but I think the majority of people won't go out and buy more comics simply because online manga sites are shutting down. They would just middle finger the manga publishers and that's that.

Fortunately for me I can still rely on chinese manga sites and I don't think they will ever shut down. I am still angry at the manga publishers for making such a move which will only fuel the anger and not provide any benefits in return.

  3. I wouldn't.

Well, same as Persona I still have Chinese sites that will never die. But I make pretty much all my decisions on whether to buy manga or not off that. I would much sooner invest in a whole 20 volume series that I've read part of on the internet than take risks at the bookshop. I can't do this with BL manga so I tend to be VERY careful with those. Either judging from the mangaka, cover, blurb or reviews.

Some of my biggest collections and favourite manga started out over the internet. Especially a great shoujo series called "Momoiro Heaven" that I passed over in the bookshop billions of times, but completely fell in love with when I tried it out on the internet. I then went back to buy the whole series.

Get it straight from scanlator site? At least until those get shut down too.

  6. I hate to see what the publishers are doing right now.
Sites like onemanga for me is the only way to get known to new series.

Beceause the stuff they sell in the bookshops where i live (belgium) is so limited and so mainstream; naruto, deathnote, bleach, kenshin, dragonball, strawberry panic and i have to wait ages until new volumes come out :s

I was thinking the exact same thing.

I'm wondering though, does anyone here even spend money on manga in the first place? Just like most of you, I have to have some way of getting interested in a manga without buying it, although it doesn't necessarily have to be reading it online. Sometimes I read a manga a friend has or something. But once I get into a series, I'm quite avid in buying all of the volumes. I even replaced a book when the front came off in my bag. I wish they were a little cheaper though. And on that note, maybe lowering prices is actually a good way to raise manga sales? But yeah, €10 per book isn't such a pretty price, in my opinion. Sgt. Frog is a series I want to complete, for example. But I only have 6 volumes so far, and buying the rest would cost me another €140.

  8. I'll just find another site to go to

  9. Nin has a point with the price. Before, Borders and B&N would have buy X get 1 free sales on manga. Me and my brothers would each buy 1 and share the other. But now they rarely have that sale or don't have the manga we wanted. Coupled with the price increase for many titles, we havn't bought manga in a while.

  10. Price is part of why I think it's doing poorly in the US. Or at least, much worse than it was. It's a bit of a hard sell in a bookstore when I have a friend who's interested but on the fence about it to buy a $10-$20 book that he can read in an hour or two, when he's surrounded by similarly priced books that might entertain him for days.

I don't really care if they shut down commercial sites or scanlators that are doing licensed series, as long as the provide a reasonable and comparable alternative. I don't think much can be done on the paper side of things since as I understand it, over production by licensing and releasing everything as fast as possible, no matter how mundane and boring the series, is part of why the industry is crap at the moment. But if the offered reasonably fast scans (at least keeping up with the tankoban) as either a $3-$5 per volume fee or maybe $10 a month for a subscription to current chapters, I'd support it. But I'd want hi-res images without DRM on them, and I doubt they'd be willing to comply.

  11. I started buying manga en masse last month or so i've spent about 500-600 dollars on manga in thje past 2 months along side my pre orders of series like negima and rosaiovampire and so on. So yes some do buy but i also read scanlations cause they are more accurate (well the good ones) and in the case of negima to also stay up to date.

Indeed. This problem has been commented since the 19th century, when musicians claimed that the distribution of sheet music was killing the artists and dooming them to die of hunger. I'll eagerly expect the day when they understand that copyright was a bad idea from the beginning. Meanwhile I'll check some Creative-Commons-licensed music.

  14. I find it interesting that the manga publishers haven't released a site to compete with these scanlators sites hosting their own content.

I hate reading manga on my pc so I prefer buying them. In Finland most manga are imported though, so they're rather pricy. I tend to buy them from Germany (where unfortunately the prices have started to rise recently).

I have over 200 volumes of various series so far. Probably around 300 if I count my sister's japanese manga as well.

Ah yeah, I loved those kinds of sales. When I'm ordering online instead of buying from a bookstore, I can at least order without shipping costs if I order three or more manga at the same time. But that doesn't really reduce the cost of the books per piece...

Perhaps that is the next step. It doesn't sound illogical to do after shutting down the major scanlation sites. Although I imagine they'd only host previews. A handful of chapters, but not one entire volume, for example.

Hmm I say they take a page from marvel and offer a similar service. I would gladly pay a monthly fee, as long as I deem the price reasonable, to read a large collections of mangas online. They don't even have to charge it would seem; Onemanga generated plenty of ad revenue. If they do what you suggested they may do then that is wasted opportunity

I frequently see discounts for Borders but it always says comics don't apply and I never remember if that includes manga. I find Rightstuf is a decent place for me to buy manga. They frequently have 33% off sales for a certain company at a time so it's just a question of waiting and buying a bunch at once. They also have free shipping for orders over $50 (at least for Americans I don't know about overseas).

  19. Truth be told, all the publishers are doing is trying to make it harder to get pirate manga and honestly before om,mt or mf ever existed there was irc, torrents and forums. As usual it going to be the same augment about scanlation being the driving force behind populate, theres one thing to say and thats no matter what scanlations ain't going to stop and site like these are going to re-appear and the publishers already know that there just trying to stomp on the ones that give the easiest access.

And am properly one of those who have it the worse when it comes to media, Manga is 40-60$ and the stores are very and i mean VERY VERY limited, when you want something you have to order it and wait weeks, the US currency is huge and the shipping expenses are way out there and yes i have a job but you know what am not going to lie and say if i could get it for free i wouldn't, yes i know it wrong but give jacks has jacket, manga access is hard and not everywhere is the same.

  20. Sure mangas are $10-20 here in the states, but they're still cheaper than comic books =O...

Personally I stopped buying new copies of mangas and just go to bookoff and buy me used mangas for $1...

The only issue is that I gotta get to the used copy before motaku comes and steals it away =P
