I'm not expecting a deep story, but just a tiny bit wouldn't hurt right? If it doesn't really have any story, I expect comedy to make up for it (and sometimes Moe, but have seen enough Moe in K-on already). Minami-ke didn't have a story, but omg I lolled hard, every season again. Same for Ichigo Mashimaro, pure lol.
It does have "just a tiny bit" of story. Here you go. But I've never understood people who dismiss K-On! as a boring anime. You've got to know what you're looking for. When an action anime doesn't have enough action, that's a proper argument against it. A slice-of-life anime having too little story however, is a wrong line of reasoning.
Here's why I think K-On! is a great series. The anime does the genre so much justice. Slice-of-life is all about creating atmospheric situations which will make the viewer think "Oh, I totally recognize that" or "I really feel for her". In other words, everyday scenes that the viewer can relate to his own life and feelings. K-On! does this perfectly.
Besides that, another charm point of the series is the cuteness, the "moe". I understand the art style isn't everyone's cup of tea. It's as simple as that. But it definitely suits the atmosphere the series is going for. And the personalities of the characters add a ton to the cuteness as well. I think Yui and Mio are the most popular (although Tsumugi, Asuza, Ritsu and Sawako have their respective fanbases as well), and they well deserve it- Yui's clumsiness and Mio's shyness are perfectly "moe" personalities.
When it comes to humour, besides it being a matter of taste, I think it might just be the fact that it's very Japan-oriented. It's a bit hard to get into for us westerners. I wasn't too charmed by it either, at first. But after getting into the flow, it really grew on me. When you compare the anime to the manga, you can tell a lot of the great humour has really been transferred into the anime as well.
So in conclusion, I'd say "the genre doesn't suit my tastes" is a perfectly fine reason to dislike K-On!, but "it has no story" simply makes no sense.
