Sankaku Complex Forums » General

  1. Hey there Sankaku denizens. As all of us know, Google has decided to apply a double standard for their so called stance on "free-open Internet" they have continually been pushing in China for(or so they tell us) and have decided to filter results for the whole globe(since Google is used by hundreds of millions of people in the planet).

Of course, this isn't the first time Google or for that matter, the 3 Internet Search giants have emerged controversial. All three search giants are known to be enormous violators of privacy(with Google leading the way). Google and CO already know WHO YOU ARE, and what website you went to, and the precise time you were there.

For more information on this, go here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12017579/site/newsweek/print/1/displaymode/1098/ (Yes the article is on "MSN" but it belongs to Newsweek.)

Back on topic. Here we are going to post alternatives which are just as good as Google. If you have any good search engine suggustions, by all means post it here. Here are some of the websites I've tested and seem to do fine for me:

Ask.com (http://www.ask.com/) I searched for "Sankaku Complex" and everything seems to show up "The main website, some articles related to it, and the page on Enclyopedia Dramatica.

Viewzi.com http://www.viewzi.com/ The reason why I highlighted this one is because its my favorite. I searched for "Anime" and it showed me a ton of Web Screenshots for the results(of course to my surprise, I found some very interesting websites I have never seen
before. This one might be worth trying. :P

Aol.com http://www.aol.com/ Definately Yahoo's and MSN little sister; only more behaved.

There are also plenty of other search engines where that came from(incase none of the above worked for you)!

Now if you excuse me, I have some business to go to..

I can't speak for its quality overall, but this was the only one listed that actually had direct links to the Little White Butterflies blog. (i.e. everything else you mention is a google frontend)

  6. What was the big hype about cuil a while back? Did they ever improve the results you get?

  7. There is only one rule of the internet that truly matters.

Don't go anyplace you can't afford to have gone to and be found to have gone there later.

If you like downloading things you shouldn't have downloaded, accept that you went there freely, and deal with it.

Your computer can be plenty useful, and never have experienced the internet. Anything you can do online on YOUR computer, you can likely do on someone elses computer too eh.
But by that same token, see to it you know who is able to use your computer.

  8. I only use other search engines when Google gives me something like this:

In response to a legal request submitted to Google, we have removed 5 result(s) from this page. If you wish, you may read more about the request at ChillingEffects.org.

Since they apparently need to tell you that they censored something.

  9. I usually use -specific search engines, google is just for general search and only because i prefer uncluttered interfaces.

i've actually been wondering if one could create a anime/manga/games etc - specific search engine, but then again hosting and etc costs money and other blah blah.

p.s. ty for the article, thefind.com seems kewl

And I don't really care about privacy. I don't have child porn on my computer nor do I post nude pics of myself. If they want to know that I googled for waffle recipes at 23:42 on 4/2/02 then whatever.

Google's easy to use and the interface is simple. The messy interface that takes longer to load is why I don't use Yahoo and MSN. I hate yahoo with a fiery passion.

And don't even get me STARTED on AOL.

  12. There was never an issue of privacy mentioned in this thread, but either way:
Don't give up your privacy that fast.
Just because you are not affected now doesn't mean you won't be in future. But then it will be too late since you already gave up on it.
    Nice relevant quote:

"THEY CAME FIRST for the Communists,
    and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.

THEN THEY CAME for the Jews,
    and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.

THEN THEY CAME for the trade unionists,
    and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.

    THEN THEY CAME for me
and by that time no one was left to speak up."

inb4, some dull "I came" joke.

Well... I would also love to be able not to depend on Google, but IMO, we don't have a viable alternative these days.

Everything I try aside Google it's either experimental or a cluster fuck of an interface that makes me dizzy after a few minutes.

I will gladly jump the boat when an alternative comes around, but for the time being I will just have to deal with them. I do however have a separate e-mail for my really important stuff since I don't want those on Google servers... I also encrypt those but w/e.

Just be happy we are not talking about smart phones market, on my cellphone it's even worse! Google just dominates that market (99% market share perhaps? dunno ¬¬) and I can't even think how an alternative can be made with so much integrated services.
