VN of the Month Discussion Club

  1. Okay, just a goofy idea I had, feel free to shoot this down (or mass ignoring will work too).

The concept: Each month we at sankaku pick a VN to play through. The first couple weeks will be allowed for people to play throguh the game itself. At during the last week of the month, there will (hopefully) be some mass discussion about the game.

"Zomg GirlB was so MOE (insert pic)"
"I fapped so hard to scene 12 (insert pic)"
    "I shed manly tears when..."

    etc.
Minimal discussion should occur prior to the appointed discussion period, but posting walkthroughs or general tips, or asking how to do something would be totally legit.

    Why this, why now?
Well, I was rather pleased at how apparently successful my plug of Wanko to Kurasou was on the Last thing you fapped to... thread. I figure there are a few people interested in discussing it in greater detail but I don't think that thread is really the right place for it anymore. So I was thinking... create a new thread for that group of people I successful sold to, or create a system where people can talk about their favorite VN, and make sure they've played it.

So I'll start this off my declaring February the month of Wanko to Kurasou. Serious discussion of the game will commence on Feb 21, until then, get to reading!

    About Wanko to Kurasou:
WtK is essentially a slice of life comedy, it's major twist is dogs, cats, and to a lesser extent, birds have been genetically engineered to have near human appearance and intelligence. Our hero is a college student working as a part time cram school teacher who finds an abandoned dog named Mikan who, through various circumstances, comes into his care full time. But then the real fun starts a few months later, once dog mating season comes around and Mikan experiences her first pangs of heat.

    In game opener:

A Mock Commercial I personally made for the game:

Download links are provided on page 120 of the fap thread. Hopefully you're not a noob and know how to handle "rar archives" and "mount disc images". If you can't figure out how to install the game, try googling those two phrases.

  2. I like this Idea especially since I'm a VN noob and I would like to check out more VN's recommended by Sancon. So far I've only played and finished one VN(Saya no Uta)which was recommended to me by Saruda. It was great played it nonstop till the end XD

  3. Currently playing 「君が呼ぶ、メギドの丘で」Kimi ga Yobu, Megiddo no Oka De, but I'll give 「わんことくらそう」Wanko to Kurasou a try. It'll be interesting seeing how the discussion will end up being~ ^^

  4. This sounds like a good idea. I haven't had a good Wanko to Kurasou discussion since I stopped visiting 4chan. I'm surprised that on a site like sancon, there are so many users that haven't played this game yet.

  5. Just remember everyone, Kuu is my official waifu XP

I like the concept, but I'd like to make the suggestion that we alternate between more sex-intense stuff like Wanko to Kurasou or Yume Miru Kusuri, and story-intense stuff like Saya no Uta or Sekien no Inganock.

  6. I'm somewhat ambivalent about quantity of sex. As long as there is a solid story each month, I think it's fine. Wanko to Kurasou, while being very sex heavy, still has a lot of story to it. I would shy completely away from stuff where the story is only there to provide a framework for the h-scenes. I also have mixed feelings about all-ages games. Yeah, I think it's a good idea to spread out the love for VN of all genre, but on the other hand, half the reason I come to sancom is for the porn and the debauched discussion surrounding it.

I think maybe if something is particularly borderline we may want to swing in the opposite direction. If YinYang X-Change Alternative is there one month, maybe a dose of Clannad would be right for the menu.

Secondly... I'm not sure why you categorize Saya no Uta as not sex intense. It's like a 5hour game with 6+ hscenes. That's some serious erotic density, when compared to the typical VN that's 10hours/path and 2scenes/girl.

Yeah, I guess part of the point of my post was to make sure we were shying away from such games. We don't have to differentiate based on how much sex a game has, I just thought it would be useful. I didn't personally fap a single time while playing Saya no Uta because
    A) I was too caught up in the story, and
    B) The H-scenes were pretty short and usually filled with lots of plot.
Contrast this with Yume Miru Kusuri, which had a deep plot also, but which was more 'drama-centric', having H-scenes that were much longer and much more 'sensual', inviting the player to fap more to them.

I don't know, I just think it's a good thing to take some precautions to make sure that we're not going to have a lot of 'drama-centric' VNs several months in a row (For instance, Wanko to Kurasou, then Kanon, then Kana ~Imouto~, then Wind A Breath of Heart, then Katawa Shoujo would IMHO be a bad combination to have all in a row. I don't know, maybe I'm the only one who has internalized this distinction?).

Also, there are some basic rules I think we should lay down. My suggestions:
    1. No VNs that haven't been translated(Duh?)
    2. Preferably no VNs that have been licensed in an English speaking country that you can't get without using P2P. We want everyone to be able to play the games, we're not soliciting cash for the VN market(Although if people want to buy the games we're playing, great!), and we don't want people to have to risk being pestered by their ISP.
    3. We already kinda touched on this, but maybe no games that are 100% just for faps(Like anything by Lilith Soft, for instance)?
    4. We take turns or collaborate to decide who gets to choose the VN for the next month?

edit: There are very few good non-ero games we could play anyways. The two big ones at this point in time are Ever17 and Umineko(And Higurashi possibly), with Chaos; Head coming in a distant third.

  8. I definitely think it would be best to stay away from games that only focus on h-scenes and have no plot, there's just not much to discuss about those games. I also think it might be a bad idea to pick games by companies like Type-moon and 07th Expansion. They make great games but there would be too much to discuss about those games. If we pick one of their games then the discussions for them will most likely go on for too long and overshadow the next month's game.

  10. it is kinda hard to find a VN with a good story. the only other one i've heard of was the fate/stay night vn but i had trouble with it.

on the topic of wanko to kuraso, lets just say i'm taking my time with it though my mind is already made up on it and it's never being un-installed

  11. A whole week is a long time to talk about stuff.

I'll put this out there and I don't know if the majority will agree or disagree with me, but I'm fundamentally opposed to the idea of avoiding certain games because they have too much(or purposefully obfuscated) plot.

  12. Nice idea. So, when do we start commenting on the games?
How about spoliers and stuff? People who didn't play the game yet will spoil themselves while browsing this.

    no.

Use wine or something if you absolutely have to, because Japan collectively gives approximately not a shit about Linux and roughly .1% of Japanese VNs are programmed for Linux.

edit: To be exact, it looks like VNDB has exactly 16 VNs that work natively in Linux AND have Japanese as a language. I did this to filter out the shitty ren'py novels that are a dime-a-dozen in the English-speaking community.

  16. By comparison, there are 53 Japanese VNs with native support for Mac OS, and 2879 Japanese VNs with native support for Windows. This is all just on VNDB, so it's by no means comprehensive, but it gives some idea of the state of VNs in the Japanese market.

  17. Well, I think that the games of subsequent months should be part of the discussion phase. I think loose polling is the way to go, with the more vocal participants having more weight in the decision, but without total executive power falling to anyone. I think that alone should take care of the question of how sensual subsequent games should be.

I don't think that any really hard rules are necessary (other than lol english plz). I think (hope?) that we can come up with interesting choices each month without needing some set guidelines to fall back on.

I suppose I will toss out in advance that I think we should really stick to Novel based games, and not branch out into other genres of ero. Sengoku Rance, for example, would undoubtedly divulge into more gameplay discussion than story/character discussion... which is not explicitly a bad thing, I think it doesn't quite fall in the spirit of things.

OK. So that throws out umm...Utawarerumono, Eien no Asalia, Tears to Tiara, the Princess Maker games, Men at Work, MOON(?), Crimsoness(lolol), and a few others. I haven't played Eien no Asalia yet, and the patched version is all ages anyways, but that's the only one I think I'd even mildly miss. We throwing out dating sims too? I think it might be a mildly wise move...

But yes, get cracking on Wanko to Kurasou, those of you who are interested in this little project and haven't played it! :P

    1. I agree with, but we do miss out on several good/really good titles. 遥かに仰ぎ、麗しの [From Pulltop] and Little Busters [From Key] for a few. Still, it can't be helped. -_-
    2. No issues there. I think~
    3. Or anything from Illusion et al.
    4. Collaboration~ Or a list of titles people post on, and maybe we'll vote on it?

I can't really think of any more conditions that would exclude the Sex-oriented from the Story-oriented ones. And...

That. There are already whole forums by the fan-base discussing the ins-and-outs of the Nasu-verse. Maybe a future (or new) condition would be to grab only games that are easy/fairly easy to understand without a great deal of prior knowledge?

    EDIT: For brevity.

  20. No Wanko Plot Spoilers Until Feb 21. I think we should have a new thread for each game... that way people who might be joining later on won't need to weed throguh spoilers of games they haven't played.

    If you want a walkthrough:
    http://wanko.walkthrough.tripod.com/

About the weeklong discussion... That's totally arbitrary. I just wanted to set up a time period where we could discuss things before worrying about getting into the next game.

Also, I'm not into blacklisting, part of this is to expose people to games they might not otherwise have considered playing. I don't want Fate/Stay Night to be in this, in part because it's already been discussed in at least two thread on sankaku, and in part because I think there are very few people who haven't at least considered playing FSN thanks to its extreme popularity.
