I don't think invoking "censorship" is really appropriate in the case of private sites setting standards for the content they allow users to publish on the site. Implying that sites should be forced to publish any comment a user happens to make is actually itself a worse abrogation of freedom of expression.
In any case, comments and forums are moderated. Not just on "quality," but on content - for starters many tens of thousands of spam comments never even made it onto the page. We don't want endless repetition of memes, illegal behaviour, malign slander or any other abuse on the page either. These might of course be considered elements of "quality."
The fact that you confuse an extremely liberal moderation regime with the right to post anything you want and have us publish it is a misconception on your part.
Regarding comment threading, I'm not rushing any changes but I do wonder whether threading is appropriate versus a flat "reply" layout, but removing threading is probably too radical.
I take your point in all you said. I just personally stated my opinion however previously: who are we to decide what reply is troll or serious? Though I do see what you want a bit more clearly then last time you made an appearance.
The only way comments could be reordered by score is by reordering parent threads too, which severely complicates things. I think a phase 2 comment overhaul with ajaxed pages and other changes might include something like that.
Complication or not, I personally unwelcome the idea.
A variety of other user functionality (PMs, profile pages, user groups, etc.) should be incoming before that.
I welcome this one, and at the same time, I see complications on this, too...
what BBS software does forum and site run off? This doesn't look like phpBB much to me but at the same time, elements are similar to older forums I used to goto, so just decide to ask. If for security reason you can't say, it's fine however.
