I'm not really attracted to Garrus though. I think he is a wonderful character and love the romance between him and shepard, but y'know...he's still a scaly space bird. Even though I make jokes about him his appearance doesn't exactly get me going. His voice is very attractive though.

Exophilia as I would define is never about things wholly unrelatable to the human experience. Everything about it will always tie back to our core desires ether socially, emotionally, or sexually. You'll notice often that monster-y people of all types have features indicative of personality traits embedded within their designs, and very rarely have things in them that are meaningless to the viewer's impressions.
I could care less for the animal aspect of what I was looking at in-and-of-itself; it's the confident, strong, carrot loving she-hulk that's attached to it.
And I guess also her boobs and dick.
