I request information from someone that has graduated from College and is working right now.
^If you fit those requirements, here's some background information.
I have to consider changing my major due to some....difficulties. I was previously majoring in Japanese language because I want to translate manga officially with a publishing company.
Well, stuff happened and now it'll be incredibly challenging(but not impossible) to fulfill the major requirements within my allotted time. My teacher doesn't feel that I'll be ready to tackle the next class based on my performance in my previous class. And so he recommended I consider other majors.
I can easily fulfill a non-language major in the department. It'll just be a simple East Asian Studies Humanities major. About as liberal arts as you can get.
Changing majors does not mean I have to give up on my goal of translating manga though. I don't really know how much majoring in it will help my chances of being a translator, but having the knowledge I've already obtained coupled with some self study along with taking the JLPT(Japanese Language Proficiency Test) could very well be sufficient to put on a resume for this kind of job. I think the JLPT will be considered more when hiring translators then checking whether the person majored in the language in college.
QUESTION:
I want to ask you, how much has your major influenced your career path. Is it like, whatever I choose as my major now will determine my future? Or do companies even look at what you majored in? Can I have a career in something totally unrelated to my major?
Should I decide my major based on:
what I want to do?
what I can do?
what I expect to be the most profitable?
