Actually my PC is faster than a near identical one with win7. Why? Because I only use the fastest software(like Chrome instead of Opera).
Also, Vista is actually less bloated if you turn off all the useless shit.

Is this a setting somewhere? I've never seen a way to change it. (Not that I want to, though.)It's a little freaky that the times on both screenshots are made up of the same numbers.
It's always good to have more options, right?
Right click on the taskbar, properties, and then under taskbar appearance there's a "use small icons", so either select it or not to change it. However it'll change the entire taskbar, not only that thing on the corner.

I'm just guessing, but maybe it has something to do with your resolution? I'm on 1920x1200.
No, that's not it. My button is too big in proportion to all other things on the task bar. Here's a screenshot of my entire desktop.

Enabling small icons only decreases the button's size vertically though. It still stays fat. In fact, it almost turns it into a square. I'm just wondering how to get a slim button like on everyone else's desktop while still using normal sized icons.

Oh, I didn't know that. I'll give it a try. But the icons are so tiny and feel so far away. I may switch back.
I've been sporting this wallpaper for awhile now.

Kill aero, the widgets,up date IE to 9, and use VLC in place of WMV etc.

Yeah, but with that there's an option that sort of let you get back the feel of XP/Vista taskbars if you want.
I've got to apologise to Nin because I tested, wasn't paying attention and I thought it was the solution. My laptop has that thing fat even using an external monitor, but my desktop have it slim, wished it was the opposite.

VLC... At least recommend something more useful like foobar2000 or winamp.
I made all my buttons and toolbars invisible, but I'm using a "She and Her Cat" background, which is kinda unusual for me. I love it regardless.

Winamp I have not ran that since 2004.

Oh, so you've got a fat button too? Well, I'm glad to know it's not a bug in my version of Windows or something.

Do you have a touch screen or graphics tablet installed?
