What the fuck is ASMR?

Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) is a neologism for a perceptual phenomenon characterized as a distinct, pleasurable tingling sensation in the head, scalp, back, or peripheral regions of the body in response to visual, auditory, olfactory, and/or cognitive stimuli.
However, it is also often used in non-formal to describe the media that trigger this phenomenon, so people might say "here's some ASMR", when they really mean "here is something that is likely to trigger ASMR".
What are some common triggers?
Whispering into someone's ears, haircutting or other haircare, general close personal attention to someone's face or head, tapping and brushing noises and water sounds are all common triggers for ASMR, but they're not the only ones.
Many of these triggers are enhanced if they are binaural: that is, if they're in stereo and give the impression of being three-dimensional. This increases immersion and can give the person experiencing ASMR the sensation of really being there. Binaural sound is most beneficial when the ASMR trigger is some kind of personal attention. In some cases, the person with ASMR gets the sensation of physically feeling something being done to them.
What equipment do I need to get the most out of this stuff?
You need a dark, quiet room where you can be left alone, and a good pair of headphones. The sensation is uslaly strongest when one is lying in bed with one's eyes closed, since one is deprived of all other sensory input and can concentrate on the noises. This state also increases the chances of perceiving being touched, so is advisable for triggers like whispering, scalp massages and hair cutting.

Is this a sexual thing?
ASMR is not inherently sexual. However, like psychedelic drugs, it can enhance feelings that would still exist in a weaker form without it. in this case, if an ASMR video contains sexual dialogue, it may trigger sexual feelings in the listener.
