If the trend is copied by Muslims in the west, then it makes me feel very good, because it would basically be the first decent public rejection of Islamic fundamentalism by Muslims in forever.

But if it's a trend primarily followed in the sandbox, I'm not particularly thrilled.

Russia’s actions in Ukraine challenge this post-war order. Here are the facts. After the people of Ukraine mobilized popular protests and calls for reform, their corrupt President fled. Against the will of the government in Kiev, Crimea was annexed. Russia poured arms into Eastern Ukraine, fueling violent separatists and a conflict that has killed thousands. When a civilian airliner was shot down from areas that these proxies controlled, they refused to allow access to the crash for days. When Ukraine started to reassert control over its territory, Russia gave up the pretense of merely supporting the separatists, and moved troops across the border.

This is a vision of the world in which might makes right – a world in which one nation’s borders can be redrawn by another, and civilized people are not allowed to recover the remains of their loved ones because of the truth that might be revealed. America stands for something different. We believe that right makes might – that bigger nations should not be able to bully smaller ones; that people should be able to choose their own future.

These are simple truths, but they must be defended. America and our allies will support the people of Ukraine as they develop their democracy and economy. We will reinforce our NATO allies, and uphold our commitment to collective defense. We will impose a cost on Russia for aggression, and counter falsehoods with the truth. We call upon others to join us on the right side of history – for while small gains can be won at the barrel of a gun, they will ultimately be turned back if enough voices support the freedom of nations and peoples to make their own decisions.

    I had some cognitive dissonance

  11. It took them a while, but mosque goers around here are starting to question the dubious sermons and the Middle Easterns giving them, who openly praised ISIS.

ISIS' brutality will be their own downfall. That, and them deciding to hunt other Muslims of different sects instead of going straight to Israel; not that I'd support ISIS if they somehow get to nuke Tel Aviv tomorrow, but it makes for an astounding show of hypocrisy. Interestingly, the concept of 'munafiqeen' that ISIS leaders seem to abhor so much is, at it's core, hypocrisy.

  12. The Islamic State knows its limits.

It's easier to kill disorganised groups of Iraqis who can't defend themselves than it is to fight the biggest power in the region.

Looks like Yemen is in a pickle:

The great thing about this is the reduction of Saudi influence.

Maybe in the process to weaken both Saudi Arabia and Iran, we can encourage the reformation of South Yemen.

It's too bad Yemen can't get it's shit together what with Hezbollah Houthis, Al-Qaeda insurgents and communists. One of the most underrated and beautiful countries in the world, by far.

  17. Yes

Imam Ahmad bin Yahya, who had inherited the Yemeni throne in 1948, was known as "Ahmad the devil" by his enemies. In 1955, Iraq-trained Colonel Ahmad Thalaya led a revolt against him. A group of soldiers under his command surrounded the royal palace of Al Urdhi at Taiz, a fortified stronghold where the Imam lived with his harem, the royal treasure, an arsenal of modern weapons, and a 150 strong palace-guard, and demanded Ahmad's abdication. Ahmad agreed, but demanded that his son, Muhammad al-Badr succeed him. Thalaya refused, preferring the King's half brother, the Emir Saif el Islam Abdullah, the 48-year-old Foreign Minister. While Abdullah began forming a new government, Ahmad opened the treasury coffers and secretly began buying off the besieging soldiers. After five days, the number of besiegers was reduced from 600 to 40. Ahmad then came out of the palace, wearing a devil's mask and wielding a long scimitar, terrifying the besiegers. He slashed two sentries dead before exchanging the sword for a sub-machine gun and leading his 150 guards onto the roof of the palace to begin a direct attack on the rebels. After 28 hours, 23 rebels and one palace guard were dead and Thalaya gave up. Abdullah was later reported executed, and Thalaya was publicly decapitated.
