The article said that the average number of hours that an American works is longer, but this assumes that only logged hours are taken into consideration.

Japanese are notorious for doing "service overtime" meaning unpaid overtime that is "expected" or forced upon them. So the actual number of hours are much longer than the 1,735 stated in the article. None of these extra hours is documented to avoid legal problems and thus it appears that the average American works longer.

Furthermore, if you are an American employee in a Japanese company, unpaid overtime may also be expected of you, even if you are a part-time worker.

US workers are not lazy by a long shot if anything the average US worker is often overworked compared to their European counter part and often have fewer holidays and paid sick days.
Long hours and the stress that come with them is a major contributer for a lot of the health problems the US population has.

True enough, though I never specifically stated that Americans are lazy. Industrious and hard-working, but only when actually paid.

The point of contention was who worked longer, and that's definitely Japanese people because of the unpaid overtime.

"Karoshi," death from overwork, is a Japanese word after all.

  4. University of Michigan reverses decision, will show 'American Sniper' as scheduled

    http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/04/09/university-michigan-reverses-course-will-show-american-sniper-as-scheduled/

    http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2015/04/08/students-force-university-to-cancel-screening-american-sniper/

The University of Michigan said late Wednesday that it will show the film "American Sniper" as originally scheduled after a protest by students and staff caused the screening to be scrapped.

University Vice President for Student Life E. Royster Harper called the decision to cancel the Friday night showing a "mistake" in a statement.

"The initial decision to cancel the movie was not consistent with the high value the University of Michigan places on freedom of expression and our respect for the right of students to make their own choices in such matters," Harper said. "The movie will be shown at the originally scheduled time and location."

Harper added that the university will also screen the family-friendly film "Paddington" as an alternative.

"American Sniper", which stars Bradley Cooper as former Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, was originally scheduled to be shown as part of a university-sponsored social event called UMix. However, the screening was canceled after a protest letter garnered more than 300 signatures.

"The movie 'American Sniper’ not only tolerates but promotes anti-Muslim and anti-MENA [Muslim, Middle Eastern and North African] rhetoric and sympathizes with a mass killer," the letter read in part. "Chris Kyle was a racist who took a disturbing stance on murdering Iraqi civilians."

"Watching this movie is provocative and unsafe to MENA and Muslim students who are too often reminded of how little the media and world value their lives," the letter continued.

The cancelation drew a strong reaction, and The Michigan Daily reported that a third-year Law School student named Rachel Jankowski circulated a petition calling on the university's Center for Campus Involvement to restore "American Sniper" to the UMix schedule. The university's football coach, Jim Harbaugh, weighed in on the controversy by tweeting that he would watch the movie with his team.

Before Harper's statement, the Center for Campus Involvement had announced plans to show "American Sniper" in a separate location from the UMix program, in what it said would be "a forum that provides an appropriate space for dialogue and reflection." It was not immediately clear whether the "forum" would be part of the revived Friday night screening.

    @CoachJim4UM

Michigan Football will watch "American Sniper"! Proud of Chris Kyle & Proud to be an American & if that offends anybody then so be it!

  6. A middle school student is charged with a felony for changing the desktop of a teacher's computer.

    http://www.tampabay.com/news/publicsafety/crime/middle-school-student-charged-with-cyber-crime-in-holiday/2224827

Seriously WTF is the US coming to?
It's just a middle school network not a bank's central mainframe there's not exactly much of value to steal or destroy in there.

The password to get in was probably the teacher's last name or something similarly stupid.

Damn I used to mess around my high school's network all the time and install games and steal software.
Heck one kid put a virus on the network and took down all the macs.
No police were called and they just fixed them the next day.

  10. DETROIT SHE-BOON MAKES HALF OF HER LITTER GOOD, TORTURED NIGLETS FOUND DEAD IN FREEZER

Regrettably, the other two jigs survived and were taken into care.

    http://abc7chicago.com/news/children-found-in-freezer-were-tortured-and-beaten-say-sources/589496/

A brother and sister whose bodies were found in a deep freezer in their Detroit home had been beaten to death, autopsies determined Friday, painting a more complete picture of the horrors that unfolded inside the home for years but that apparently went unnoticed by the outside world.

The Wayne County medical examiner's office classified the deaths of Stoni Ann Blair and Stephen Gage Berry as homicides, saying both were killed by multiple blows and that the young boy also had "thermal injuries."

Their older sister, who is 17, told child welfare officials that their mother, Mitchelle Blair, tortured Stephen "for approximately two weeks prior to his death by tying a belt around his neck, throwing hot water on him while in the shower and putting a plastic bag over his head."

The girl and Blair's other surviving child, an 8-year-old boy, have been placed in the care of a relative.

Blair, 35, is jailed on first-degree child abuse charges, but prosecutors said Thursday that she could face murder charges depending on what the autopsies found. The prosecutor's office said Friday that there would be no changes in the charges over the weekend.

Investigators believe Stoni was 13 when she died and Stephen was 9. They think Stephen died in August 2012 and that Stoni died the following May.

In a court filing Thursday to end Blair's parental rights, the state Department of Human Services quoted her surviving daughter as saying that after Blair killed Stephen, his body was wrapped in a bed linen and put in the freezer.

She said in May 2013, Stoni incensed their mother by saying she didn't like either of the surviving siblings, and that their mother strangled Stoni with a T-shirt and placed a plastic bag over her mouth. The older girl said her mother forced her to put her sister's body in the freezer, the agency wrote.

Court officers carrying out an eviction notice at the family's home in an apartment complex near downtown Detroit on Tuesday found the bodies in the freezer. Neighbors said afterward that they hadn't seen the dead children for about a year - although investigators believe it must have been longer than that - and that they rarely saw the two surviving children. When neighbors asked if the children attended school, they said Blair told them the kids were being homeschooled.

The 17-year-old told child welfare officials that neither she nor her siblings had gone to school in two years. It's not clear if they actually were receiving lessons at home.

Under Michigan's school code, parents can take their children from public schools and homeschool them without alerting local or education officials.

City Councilwoman Mary Sheffield said Friday that's not good enough.

"There is no accountability whatsoever," Sheffield told The Associated Press. "You can pull your student out (of school), but there is no way to monitor the care and well-being of that child. That's a huge concern."

Sheffield, who held a prayer vigil Friday night at the family's apartment complex, said she will be working with legislators to take a closer look at the law.

The issue gained some attention briefly in 2013, when a bill was introduced in the state House that would have required parents to register their homeschool with the state.

"But it didn't go anywhere," said Bill DiSessa, state Education spokesman.

Gilda Jacobs, CEO of the Michigan League for Public Policy, said it's too easy for children to fall through the cracks.

"Nobody knows what goes on inside certain homes, and there is literally no accountability built into the homeschooling process," said Jacobs, whose Lansing-based organization is an advocacy group for the poor.

Angela Gordon, an aunt who is caring for the two surviving children, said her first priority is enrolling them in school. She said she had no indication anything was wrong at the apartment and questioned whether home checks were completed by the state.

The state said in its court filing that Child Protective Services had contacts with the family in 2002 and 2005, and that investigations substantiated allegations of physical abuse. Neither of the fathers were involved in the four children's lives, and both owe more than $10,000 in child support, the agency noted.

Blair also collected government food assistance and Medicaid for all of her children - including Stoni and Stephen - through this month.

"While we cannot release information on a specific case, this type of tragedy underscores that protecting children is the responsibility of everyone in our communities," said Bob Wheaton, state Human Services spokesman. "We rely on the eyes and ears of those in the community to help us protect children."

Out of all possible times you can throw hot water on someone, why would you pick the time the person in question is already pouring hot water on himself?
