yeah, landscapes are indeed backgrounds - but only in context, unless there is a big blank wal in place of any would be background... or a huge burnink wreck blotting out the the background,..

In England it's "how do you do?". Or if you're in Liverpool "'ey, yer alright?"
And you're not supposed to answer the question, you filthy chav. They're just greetings. Actually answering the question is considered bad form.
You're supposed to respond by saying the same thing to them. Or just saying hello.
