How quickly did you learn to touch type?

  1. When (and why?) did you learn to touch type?
How long did it take you?

Or are you still one of the peasant level 'hunt and peck' group.

Myself, it was when I was 12. Before then I had no reason to learn to type faster. But then I started using the internet as my primary method of communication and thus I felt the need to learn to type faster. That meant touch typing, so I learned.

It only took me like... maybe 10 days to get up to 80 or 90 words per minute.

  2. I never cared so I don't know.

  3. I never really cared for it, I guess I can type pretty fast cause I had a subject at school called "Mecanografía", I dont' really know how you'd call that but it was basically working with a typing machine.
God, I hated that old bitch. She'd made us write nonsense stuff like lines and lines of "aspoqwm".

  4. I didn't get good at touch typing until I was 12, because we had to learn to touch type in sixth grade. My parents bought one of the Mavis Beacon programs a few years before that and I used that to help learn quicker than my classmates.

I hate when people want me to type stuff that doesn't make any sense... it makes it hard to actually type things... Why on earth would you want to type something as useless as "aspoqwm"?

God I hated that Mavis Beacon thingy... they had us use that thing in like 6th grade but... it was useless for me because I had no motivation to learn.

Also, wtf? Why is everyone 12 in 6th grade? I wasn't 12 until much after I finished 6th grade. :P

I guess it made it easier to learn where each letter is, now that I think about it. You had to concentrate only on those letters for a whole page.

  8. I'm always half touch typing. I'm quite bad at it(audiovisual input is much more important for me), so I'm typing while looking at the keyboard, otherwise it's more from spatial memory than the physical feedback.

Interesting. My sister does a similar thing... she doesn't touch type but she does something related to her visual-spatial memory and always has to sit in the same position with the computer on her lap... odd.

  10. When I was five. We had a game where you had to spell words before they fell from the top of the screen to the bottom, which is also how I learned the alphabet.

What game was it? Do you remember?

Also, how old are you? (Just curious.)

Kids on Keys, or something. It was for the old RadioShack Color Computer. Would've been 1992.

    And I'm 24.

  13. I was taught how to touch type in the 7th grade I think, however I didn't really use a computer until I was 14 when I started playing an MMO called Star Wars Galaxies.

Oh yeah, and I was 10/11 in sixth grade. You guys were all old for sixth graders.

  14. Well I started as Mai with a typing machine. Then when I got to the computer it was different so my Dad got me a program to learn how to type without looking that he himself had been using (since he is kinda blind, watching as he types slows his work down so he had to get that fixed).

I didn't really like that program, specially since it tried to teach me how to type with all my fingers. I normally use the index fingers, middle fingers and ring fingers. Thumb for space.

I guess it took a couple of weeks but it was easy. It's like playing the piano - after a while it's your muscle memory doing the work.

Seriously a 6th grader was max 11 where I come from... down here (southern USA) for some reason, 6th graders are like 12 or even 13. I don't get why. I guess everyone starts later here. I hate this place, everyone is retarded I guess.

  17. I learned in middle school or was it high school. I don't remember, but it was a computer class.

  18. I find it odd that a lot of people actually learned from a class... very few things that I actually retained I learned in school. It's probably because I have to be motivated... to retain anything and actually learn it...

  19. I don't really touch type. I tend to glance at the keyboard and then back to the screen. Also I only type with my index fingers and middle fingers, but I'm quite quick.

Did you send your mom emails to ask when dinner was going to be ready?
