It really depends on what you're talking about. A large percentage of the general population watches One Piece. Lots of girls read shoujo manga (it's like teen novels for them), and I'd say many if not all teenagers read mainstream manga casually. It doesn't carry a nerdy implication unless it's like your only interest. I don't know so much about the hardcore fanbases, but Akiba is quite full of shoppers for anime goods.
Anecdote; Guys in my high school class liked K-On. One had the biggest crush on Mio. That being said none of them were otaku.
