Also The Illusionist is very good, but not entirely deserving of its praise. It has some of the best animation of any film ever, the characters are likable, and it's well paced, but it really has no story. When it gets to the end, most viewers are confused because it just kind of stops right when it seems to finally be going somewhere. On my second viewing, the themes became more apparent, but there are other films that are mainly allegorical that still attempt to tell a tale (the most recent example being The Dark Knight Rises), an approach I find more successful.

I kind of like that about it, though.

  4. I'd be ok with a very simple story drawn out over a long period, like 2001: A Space Odyssey, but no story at all is a problem (unless you're going all the way and making something avant-garde). The Illusionist doesn't go anywhere until the very end, when it tries to force something in so quickly it loses any significance.

  20. I liked Paperman, but it's garbage compared to what truly deserves the Oscar.
