If the artist were Japanese, he most likely would be unfamiliar with the gesture, so accidental.

There's an option video floating around that shows a part where some dude wants nomuken to sign his shirt and he writes "Baka gaijin" in Japanese instead of his name. I've also heard that he insulted and embarassed some white guy at some track in Japan in front of a crowd of people.
