A friend of mine just got a job recently, so I congratulated him and asked how much he'll be making. He got skittish about it, like he'd rather not answer. I can understand why you wouldn't want the world to know, but if it's just between friends, isn't it okay to talk about that stuff? It's not like I'm gonna mooch money off of him if he's making a fortune, or feel pity for him if the pay wasn't that good. I ain't gonna judge.

It could stem from the idea that people's class is determined by how much they make. Like aristocrats. I think that's a pretty old fashioned way of thinking though.
