  1. A thread for wannabe or current writers to share tips, ideas and their work.

There is also a group (http://www.sankakucomplex.com/groups/writers-ltd/) but it is inactive.

I want to learn from others with this thread so I won't start with anything of my own.

I am sure that we have writers here with hidden talents that are willing to share some knowledge. - after all we have an artists thread, so why not broaden the horizon somewhat, for those that have the capacity with and for the written word.

  7. I could post a wall of text or something, but I'll just start us off with a short ode I wrote recently.

    ---
There was once a website of splendor
    Beloved by millions worldwide
And though it held much on its servers
    The valiant hero has died
For days, weeks, did everyone mourn it
    And hoped that maybe, somewhere
There would be a way to revive it
    But until then, farewell Rapidshare

  8. OK, let's start with the beginning:
character creation - what would make a character appealing? What would make people identify with a main character and yet be fascinated by it to want to know what happens?

plot - what would make a plot appealing? What are the types of twists and turns that will keep readers wanting more?

Examples - any examples from fanfics/non-fiction/stuff you've written yourself or read somewhere?

  10. to make anything appealing, you first have to think of who's gonna read what you write. Age, gender, census, instruction, you first have to think of this. There's no "universally interesting".

    Vegio is right.
Assume age 16/18 (high school/ college).

    If you're writing for male
    - harem with lots of girls will be good.
    - in the end choose only one girl, the true one which he really like.

    If you're writing for female
    - reverse trap surrounding with lots of boys will be good.
    - end with only one boy who always have been looking after her.

When i start to write all the story for the games that i am developing , sometime ago someone who was like my teacher in this kind of thing , he told me : instead of break your head making an story/back story of the characther just use your own life and also the live of your friends , just add it a little of fantasy or remove/add thinks and there you go , and i am following his example , the characther will do the same mistakes that i did , the character will regret , suffer and when he is at the verge that he doesnt care to live anymore the persons close to he will help him , he will discover who were they true friends but in the way , he will not only lose the person who loved it just because he was affraid of himself, a couple of years of his life wasted .

  14. people often sympathize with contexts and characters to which they either relate easily to, or which they want to be like. Or which they can completely disregard to better focus on other aspects; that's often why main characters in harem manga/anime are useless stupid, dense, pathetic people, or almost non-existant.

In this, the social status of the readers plays a major role too. People living in bad contexts will want to either escape from their routine, dreaming of something completely different, or will want a character they can relate to, sympathize with, and who'll become succesful and give them hope. Aladdin comes to mind :P

  15. Vegio is right - you're either going to write for a specific market like journalists and reporters do.
Or you could be some rogue independent novelist who churns out short stories and the occasional novel.

Or you could be a poet that either submits your poems to a publisher or magazine, or club, or publish your own poems.

Then there are the writers who do screen plays for movies and telebision. some make adapations of other people's books. For example to make the movie V for vandetta a lot of material had to be sacraficed to make the story workable into a feature length movie.

You don't know if your a good writer or a bad one - but you do have to try & get started some where.
    Another example:
Remember Carrie Fisher - she was Princess Leia in Star Wars. After a while of putting up with her alcoholic parents & acting jobs she wasn't to happy with, she found her true calling as a screen writer.
So she to is a novelist, and does the writing for movies and television productions.

Even George Lucas was an unknown virtual nobody before he found some financiers to take a gamble on producing SW the new hope IV.

Amd when Miyazakisan made Nausicca of the Valley of the Wind, he knew all too well how much of a heart break it was to "condense" one of his life's work, since he wrote and illustrated the original graphic novel.

You know the movie 5 centimeters per second was originally conceived as having 10 short stories, not the three we all know.

  16. IF YOU WANT TO BE A WRITER, BUY THIS BOOK:

For my quick advice, here are the rules my Storytelling teacher has hammered into the class's brains. These rules can obviously be broken if you're feeling inventive, but your story will ALWAYS be successful if you hit all these.

    ---
    Involve your audience immediately

    Have appealing heroes

    Have compelling villains

    Every story must have conflict

    Leave your audience wanting more

Do not set something up and not deliver

Tell the story as if your life depended on it
    ---

Conflict is any problem presented. It can be mundane or life-threatening; physical, emotional, or psychological; comedic or tragic; it just HAS to be there.

For the not-delivering part, if you go through the whole story saying "boy, it sure will be terrible if that kid drops the vase," and then the kid never drops the vase, you'll piss people off. They were waiting all this time for when he would drop it, and you let them down. Again, this can be broken, but unless you're a genius or you have a ton of experience, follow the rule.

Making a character appealing depends on the story you want to tell. An easy way is to make them cute or charming; that works for Pixar, and it has been working for Japan since the beginning of time. The second-easiest way is to make them cool - someone your audience looks up to. However, a truly unique character is going to take a lot of thought. You might even have to come up with their whole life story.

Well, I've always wanted to write a story in a fictional setting which is actually based on my own observations/life. But my past attempts have been failures because my characters come out "stiff" and unnatural. I know a good character is one that people can relate to (like Vegio said), but due to my inborn personality, I have no idea how "normal" people think; which is my main flaw in writing. This is one reason why I started this thread.

    The other reason is:

Input real charactertics, makes lead actor/ actress to the verge of breakdown that any choice made will hurts the other parties. But finally, a choice has made which everyone will still accepts as logical. Or the others step down let the two love birds get together - self-sacificing.

You think there haven't been famous writers who can't get along with real people?

Well, I've always wanted to write a story in a fictional setting

    ---and stuff---

    The other reason is:

You really should just write, even if its bad or awful. Its the same as being an artist,... You need to practice your art. by drawing and sketching before you be a better artist.

So your first draft or version is bad - maybe. You can always rewrite and make revisions to your story to bring out the fullness of your characters. Just like how children have to learn to walk before they can run. They will trip and fall many times before they learn to run around screaming their little heads off and start driving your crazy.

Just relax and enjoy writing what ever you feel like writing, yo don't even have to start from the begining. You can start in the middle or at the end and work backwards.

Did you know that when George Lucas writes his own originals, he does so by writing bits and pieces sometimes in the middle of a story sometimes at the end. Because it takes several tries to "work out" a character's developement. sometimes its really bad some times its genius.

Just don't be afraid to ask for help when you get stuck or take breaks when you feel you've hit a wall.

. . . one last thing - you gotta learn to know when to break up a wall of text into paragraphs. it makes it easier to read.
