anyway, I've been watching cowboy bebop recently. it makes me kinda sad that there's nothing even remotely close to that style of anime these days. :/ not to say that modern anime is bad but there just aren't any anime that have a mature feel to it anymore. they either look like a show for kids or have giant titties poppin' out every two seconds... le sigh

Better yet, do a search, find the oldest - (that is before you were born oldest) - and start from there and watch how it all started to evolve....

Anyway, some older anime that I have on hand but haven't watched lately are:
Rose of Versailles
Touch
Maison Ikkoku
Kimagure Orange Road
Gunbuster
Koko wa Greenwood
All Purpose Cultural Catgirl NukuNuku
Giant RoboI was working forward from the earliest one (I skipped over a few). It looks like the oldest anime I've rewatched recently is Nozomi Witches, which is probably not that well known, but that's my answer for now.

Not many take the time to go back in time to appreciate the older anime, as many don't like the art style, craft, and (as uncommon stated) the mistakes made along the way.
But, if some do (decide) to make that journey... I can tell you that its well worth it..
One will soon realize that what is seen now, is actually quite - "tame" - in many respects, though to be fair, the anime style has improved through time and (of course) is dependant on personal tastes.
Be it Animu or (even) Hentai... take time to appreciate what was once before, learn, watch without tunnel vision, and see with open eyes...

I watched the anime in bold and some of them are the best I have ever seen. If the remaining anime are half as good as them, they will be well worth watching to me.
Kimagure and Ikkoku are similar, some average guy(i.e. loser) who falls in love with an incredible woman. They are classics mainly because the audience could identify themselves with the characters, some values might seem outdated and silly today, but that aside they are still fun and you get true closure with a harem anime, something which I don't remember in any recent ones.
Giant Robo is a typical young boy anime, giant robot vital to save the world, fights with super-powers, guts, courage, and so on. Fits right in with the usual /m/ anime. I don't remember anything about the very old live-action and the TV-series was never fully subtitled, but the OVA is amazing, the plot is quite involving, the soundtrack and the animation are suberb, it is obvious since they took almost a year for each episode.

GunbusterTop wo Nerae(it's a reference to some old tennis anime) are in my top ten.
RoV is for the little information I know of the French Revolution mostly historically accurate whilst at the same time bringing various interesting viewpoints about it, like how it protrays Louis and Marie Antoinette as not being actually evil. You know what is going to happen and you can't help but wish for the happiness of the entire cast, which are all quite remarkable.
Gunbuster has a brilliant story and a surprisingly believable fictional science background. Considering you knew about the Asimov-Clarke Treaty of Park Avenue I'll take a wild guess that you love science, and as such you should also check out the little shorts Top wo Nerae: Science Lessons. The story is marvelous even if you don't like much about science, it just happens it is even better if you love it. Hmmmm... I don't think I watch anything Classic. I think the most ' Classic' thing I've watched is "Shamanic Princess". For me "Maburaho" is classic.

Yeah, but Gunbuster handles it in a more interesting way IMO. Gunbuster is older, and originality counts a lot to me.
