It is.
At the same time, uhm... between the lines, he's also saying thank you. He's laying his heart bare to someone else, thanking another person for giving him a chance, for being there, for helping out when he needed the most.
You may say he's to be praised for liking her enough to still want to see her and for being loyal, but oh wow.
When you consider the subtext... if he was that gloomy, he can't have been much fun to hang out with. Maybe she just dated him as a joke, he took it way too seriously and he just couldn't let go. And time after she finally broke up with him, he's still so into her he can't think of anything else. You can pity the people who'll be brave enough to try and befriend a person who still clings so much to the shadows of the past.
Yes, that's pathetic indeed.
