I highly doubt they would 'remake' it in the strictest sense of the word.
Resident Evil: Code Veronica and Resident Evil 4 received HD makeover for PS3 and call them 'remakes'. You know what Capcom did? Increase resolution and polygon count per character, use higher quality textures and sound samples and fix the lighting here and there. THAT'S IT. I'd bet 500 bucks it's the same thing S-E's doing for FFX.
People asking for remakes of PSX era FFs and older need to think 3 seconds more. I mean c'mon... if they have to do an HD 'remake' for FFVIII for example, they'll have to remodel all those backgrounds from 2D to 3D and resculpt the shitty 3D models for all characters and monsters. Can you imagine just how much work that would be? And I brought FFVIII up because it's the easiest out of PSX era FFs due to its more realistic approach in graphic style. FFVII and FFIX both use highly simplified and minimalist approach in graphic design and remaking that's gonna cost a hella lot more. That's saying NOTHING of the amount of work FFVI(a fully 2D game) would need.
S-E or whoever's reporting the news shouldn't be using the word 'remake' because this is what I believe they'll do for this HD 'remake' of FFX.
1. Crank resolution up to 1080p
2. Put 16bit textures all over the place
3. Use high-poly models for all gameplay and battle scenes instead of only the select few seconds that have camera close-ups in PS2
4. Maybe rework the lip-synching
5. Higher quality audio with multi-language streams(maybe even lossless)
6. If they're generous, convert several FMV scenes into full in-game sequence(highly doubt this)
7. Call it an HD 'remake' although it's just a mere upgrade(like increasing graphics settings in your PC games from 'shitty' to 'MAX RES AND 32xAA')
8. ???
9. PROFIT!
As you can see, most of this HD 'remake' you're getting is putting higher setting to accomodate more powerful platforms. Same shit Konami is pulling off with Metal Gear HD and Silent Hill HD. It might look gorgeous enough for some, but in the end, they're only doing it because it's miles easier to do than with a PSX era game.
You want to see a real example of a remake? Play the 1996 original Resident Evil and compare with the Gamecube version. THAT'S a remake.
