Can anyone here bake? Just curious

  1. Considering how 'baking cookies' is such a classic in anime, just curious how many here can do it.

Right now I am making peanut butter cookies.

    1C white sugar
    1C brown sugar
    1C shortening
    1C crunchy peanutbutter
    2C flour
    2 eggs
    2 teaspoon baking soda
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    1C flaked coconut

I mixed all the dry first, then added shortening added eggs, added peanut butter and gave a good mixing with bare hands (yes messy but efficient). Wife hates using her bare hands for some reason.

Used a no greased cookie sheet (I used a black non stick sheet that had tinfoil on it) In a preheated 375 degree oven for 6 minutes, ya gots to watch them, and know your own oven.

Made from 1"-1.5" balls mashed down with fork dipped in flour I kept them well spaced apart, as they spread about 1/2" additional from original shape. I find they will look 'too' small if done right. I'm getting 12 cookies on a sheet.

Depending on energy I might do some banana muffins as well.

But you're still getting cookies that way.

    Vikings get all the women...

    @ Sukunai:
You didn't grease the cooking sheet at all? not even a little?

  7. Actually that is my text file of my recipe, I have since bought myself some new non stick cookie sheets. And yes, they bake perfectly, and they fall right off the sheet with zero sticking (of course one has to let them cool for about 5 minutes).

But the tin foil was adequate for the non stick aspect of the older method. Oddly enough though, black actually impacts the cooking process, so it matters if one uses black surfaced ones instead of silverish looking metal sheets.

An other interesting note, if you don't wash off your non stick after baking you can forget it being non stick fairly soon. Food eventually becomes permanent with repeatedly baked onto a surface (something my spouse seems unable to comprehend). As such, I don't let her use my own personal bakeware.

Happy is flipping over a dozen muffins tray that is non stick, and watching the muffins effortlessly fall out for you (unlike my spouses :)).

10 dozen cookies at 2 hours effort might seem a lot harder than just going and buying some, but even if the end result cost is about the same, nothing beats home made cookies.

  11. Just remember to take your cookies (applies to anything) out before they are at the firmness you like as they cook for 5 to 10 minutes after they are removed from the oven.

Nothing like dry cookies to ruin your day.

Dry cookies are okay if you've got a good glass of milk with them. When they're still warm is the best.

@Sorrior: You should try using a little more interpunction.

  19. And yes, cookies bake a bit longer on a cookie sheet, and as the cookie sheet will be hot, it is still effectively baking the cookies. It is also important to not put them on the oven as it will hardly be a cool location.

I usually sit the cookie sheet on top of a cereal bowl so that it cools top and bottom quickly.
