To quote the article: "The Chinese media has reported on an extraordinary account of a mother bear saving her cub from a life of torture by strangling it and then killing itself."

Apart from the fact that traditional chinese medicine is generally quite worthless and drilling holes into abdomen is one of the worse things you can do, it seems that animals have more consciousness than my philosophy teacher wanted me to believe.

This sentence is so incorrect, it made no sense to me until I read the rest of the article.

The bears are fitted with an iron vest, as they often try to kill themselves by hitting their stomach as they are unable to bear the pain.

I was just like holy fuck this has to be the most disturbing case of animal abuse I ever heard of including where that Russian guy gave a dog two heads.

But unlike the Russian dog experiments this was for bullshit quack folk medicine vs advancing medical science.

They fucking cut a permanent hole in it's abdomen to milk it's gall bladder , covered the hole with something that looks like a medieval torture device and then as to add insult to injury they place them in a tiny cage.
If I met those so called farmers I'd be so tempted to do terrible things to them.

Maybe a bullet in each knee and elbow and then drag them onto an ant hill.

I think my gall bladder is trying to run and hide where crackpot witch doctors can't find it.

If you really want to be appalled at animol cruelty, try taking a stroll through a typical Chinese or Korean open market some time.

Where you will see all kinds of animals alive, being slaugtered alive, and freshly gutted and filleted.

Anything from pigs, chickens, to kitties, doggies, lizards and hamsters.
If it walks on 2 or four legs, swims or crawls, its protein for the skillet.

As for the queerest remedies from chinese backwoods physicians. Well, if you're dirt poor and the state will not or can not provide global standard medical care.
The local witch doctor is all you got. In some provinces of china, this is the standard of medical science. Unfortunate, but true.

@lobster,... drink more fluids, more water less soda,... more fluids will flush out the tiny stones before they can build up into big huge stones (even your western physician will tell you the same thing). Unless you get a stone that is lodged in and keeps building up - then you're screwed.

I sometimes hunt animals and this just made me sick to my stomach.
Bile bear farming has to be the most cruel and sadistic thing I have ever seen.
It makes stepping on kittens and bunnies look merciful as at least they won't be suffering for long.

How can someone do stuff like this to fairly intelligent creatures and live with themselves.

Traditional Chinese medicine should be banned and people caught selling things derived from rare animals shot on site or at the very least locked a cell with Bubba.

I'm pretty sure I'm fine, but thanks anyways though. That's pretty useful information for when I really do have something important going on down there. ^-^
