  1. I personally adore cons. The lively and friendly atmosphere.
But i know some people that look down on cons as collections of the most annoying people on the planet.

True, there are some obnoxious people at the cons. "Yaoi fangirls" don't really bother me that much.

My opinion: The haters just want to feel superior, high class, refined.
The sad fact of life is that everyone wants to feel superior to someone else.

So, what's the general consensus about cons and con goers? Feel free to talk about what you like the most or hate the most about cons.

  2. It's pretty fun, sadly I won't be able to go this year to the one close by since I'll be in Turkey at that time.

  3. I've grown tired of cons these past two years. I usually just end up wasting time in the dealers rooms and the panels aren't that interesting sans Hentai Fest. Plus the young people annoy me with their constant meme yelling and the rise of unoriginal steam punk.

    Our cons need photo shoots

That's what I usually do too. Sans Hentai Fest, since I usually don't stay for late night stuff.

That would probably help keep traffic flowing in the hallways.

But I think a lot of the cosplayers like wearing the costumes and actually doing stuff, whether it's browsing the dealers room/artist alley or attending a panel/screening. I don't think that many people want to spend an excessive amount of time posing.

Most of the time, when there are group shots, they get pretty exasperated waiting for the people to finish taking the pictures.

But I suppose there are some fabulouso camwhores that would relish the next photoshoot.

Some photographers do set up "pro" photoshoots though.

    I always find them hilarious.

    Also, read it.

I haven't been to many cons, but for what concerns those where I have:
I like that I'm sure people there share some passions with me
I don't feel out of place

I don't like that there are a lot of anime 15+ years old, strictly in their italian(read: horrible) adaptation
You can't see much stuff that's not mainstream in italy. There's a depressing lack of touhou, madoka, nanoha, etc etc (then again, we're lucky that there's even a con here)

  10. I love cons.

A former SanCom person runs an anime con.

I'm flattered, but I haven't run a con yet. I plan to hold one next year though.

    Wasn't referring to you. :P
Where do you plan on hosting your con? Once you host one you will be the second SanCom member to have a convention.

I can do things to help if you ever need it, like a logo and shit.

    There is this^

But, also the occasional "Finds" when you come across a dealer who carries old stuff.
Also, once upon a tiem I too dabbled in cosplay,... Though the logistics of participating can be bothersome, if you have elaborate costumes with accessories. Afterwards, schelping it all back home too.

But it does have some redeeming rewards, participating in the psudo sub culture that despite our personal differences. Unifies you, meh & them.
    Its who we are.

  15. I've never been to one since my friends aren't really the type,
though I'd really love to go to one one of these days

  16. Been wanting to go to one since I was 5 years old and heard of comic-con for the first time in my life.

I've never been to one. To be honest, I'd never want to go to a convention here in Europe. It has to be America, perhaps Canada. A few of my Canadian friend were totally riled up about Anime North (Canada) a month or two ago. When I read through the planning, it seemed like the most boring thing ever. Things such as a cosplay rave? Sounds like a terrible idea. But they had the time of their lives. (I don't think they went to the rave though)

But hearing the great stories from people here at SanCom always gets me interested. I thin I just need to visit a proper American convention sometime in the future.

One thing I've been wondering about is whether they sell doujinshi at western conventions? Doujinshi are probably what I'd be primarily interested in buying.

  19. It really depends on the convention. Convergence (a MN based sci-fi con) is awesome. I'll miss it once I move out of state. I gave a small recap on it on my blog a few months ago.
(warning, contains a long rant about my personal sexuality that may be TMI or the average reader)

I went to Anime Detour this year and it was kinda lame. I felt a little about of place going there by myself as a 27 year old guy. I really felt that the best time to enjoy AD would be as an 18 year old high school senior. If I weren't moving, woulndn't bother attending next year, but I'm willing to check out sakuracon next year when I'm in Washington. Maybe I should try hosting a hentai panel, as I get a lot of feedback on my YT page saying I should do that at a con.
