"I couldn't have gotten so stinking rich without George Bush, George Bush Jr., Ronald Reagan, even El Presidente Obama, none of them have the cajones to stand up to all the big money that wants to keep this stuff illegal. From the bottom of my heart, I want to say, Gracias amigos, I owe my whole empire to you."

The government is probably making money off it being illegal too, though.

Implying that it's not legal in 16 states. And if anyone is profiting from marijuana being illegal it's big tobacco.

This benefited the cotton and wood products industries.
Hemp is vastly superior to wood pulp for making paper it requires less processing and makes a superior product.
It also can be blended with cotton and increase the durability of cotton fabric by a factor of four.
Another industry that pushed for hemp to become illegal was the chemical and pharmaceutical industry with companies like DOW chemical backing the ban.

Even the compound THC may have important medical benefits.

It is not said to be vastly superior nor has it be confirmed to actually be better. It is also vastly more expensive to produce though.

It is not indicated whether it is better then other cotton blends with synthetics and again the processing cost of hemp is high.

That's a bit tinfoil hat.

Actually hemp paper is vastly superior to wood pulp paper.
It does not yellow and self destruct like wood pulp paper making it a better material for books and photographs. If fact wood pulp is one of the worst materials to use in the production of paper even things like old rags and bamboo make a better grade and require less bleaching.
Money is made from rags because wood pulp can't hold up to the use.As for big pharma and chemical companies backing the ban it was not tinfoil hat.
The DuPont family backed the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marihuana_Tax_Act_of_1937DuPont saw hemp as a competitor to nylon.
Don't trust wiki go look it up at the library.
The story behind the prohibition on hemp in the US is one filled with more scum and villainy then Mos espa.
Harry J Anslinger was a very racist person.
His personal reasons for motivation behind the ban were to simply get a tool with with to oppress minorities.
I wonder how many people have pissed on his grave.

Hopefully this prohibition will be repealed soon at the federal level. At the very least, industrial hemp should be legal across the nation via interstate commerce, and laws regarding personal consumption of marijuana should be up to the states.

Stop waiting for the US government to do anything wise, look at your debt, they are simply not capable of wisdom to begin with.

As for photos, good quality photo "paper" (since it is not always actual paper) can last for a century without dis-colouring.

Money is made from rags because wood pulp can't hold up to the use.Cost is a big factor. Paper production with wood pulp is dirt cheap. Also Kenaf is superior to hemp for paper making.

Unless I missed it elsewhere,
"Some parties have argued" is not exactly solid proof.

Impartial source? If there is an agenda involved the "facts" and "motivations" can become suspect.

Usually is.
Anyway I have nothing against hemp and my biggest complaint against pot is this:
It's recreational form is via smoking and smoking should be banned. Pill form is a different matter.
Now that being said three things need to happen:
1. Same restrictions as alcohol (adult to use).
2. Very nasty penalties for self production (far harsher then now).
3. It needs to be sold in a very weak form (again similar to alcohol) such that it could be used in a manner to only get a buzz aka socially (since you are anything but social stoned).
The other problem with pot is that it is stupidly easy to grow and you get a lot of bang for your buck (unlike producing smokes or booze). This aspect of it still needs to be highly controlled.
Fortunately someone being stoned is generally a lot better then someone being drunk.

I wonder what everyone would be like if Japan legalized the cultivation and recreational drug use of cannabis out of the blue.
Probably will never despite the fact that cannabis played a major role in Japan's society before WW2; that and amphetamines.
