New VGA (dirty cheap line) | Aid needed

So, my VGA went "fuck you bastard" on me. It was a shinny HIS Ice-Q model as well. The cooler got noisy, I cleaned and greased it (after about 9 days ^^) but it kept going louder and louder until I started getting artifacts.

Don't know if something fried, the noise was just a symptom of something else or whatever, but after 2years my shinny HIS decided to take it's own life.

I am BROKE so I am going with dirty cheap line. I stood outside the VGA realm for these two years so I left when NVIDIA was REALLY crappy... I read that the GT440 are good but the 6570 still beat it. Opinions on the matter?

Also, the 6670 that I found for near nothing is a XFX model with GDDR3 (as opposed to most that come with GDDR5), does the memory bandwidth loss impact it that much?

Two things: 1. I am decided to sticking to the 100 bucks limit (I only play LOL anyway and don't mind Xogun Total War not looking that great); 2. I recon this is not the greatest forum to post something like this... so to make it up here you go random assortments of porn:

    ...tkz a lot :)

My bad... but I like to use my tongue to type thus it makes impractical to keep it shut while posting. Do you have advices of other body parts I can use on my keyboard?! If not my tongue I am clueless!!!

    @jamesownsall

Yeah... didn't occur to me to look for it. OOO well, if papa Deth so acknowledges that this should be purged I guess I can move there.

In the meantime, anything relevant will be met with great joy and thankfulness from my part.

Didn't think you're obliged to search for this either. It seems most people on here are completely happy with their rigs as long as that crappyly coded Illusion game runs fine, so it did't stay on front page for long; save for some specialists like shoganai. If anything, he'd probably know what you're looking for.

I just put the link to the original thread for your acknowledgement. What Deth thinks is up to him.

  7. The problem with buying low-end cards is that Nvidia and AMD releases new ones practically every month or so.

I'd look at the HD 5750 and GTS 450 cards as well. They are both better than the HD 6670 and they cost about as much.

    @a lolicon

Yeah, I found them in droves actually (all assortments of sizes, stickers and whatnot) but I somehow feel bad about buying a last gen card.

The 6k does have 22nm manufacturing doesn't it? I read that they work cooler and consume less energy, something I kinda hold important on a new purchase ^^

Still up to debate though... the prices does seem to be friendly on the last gen specs.

The 6570 and 6670's actually use 40nm gpus, as does the 5750. AMD's 7xxx series will be the first using 22nm.

The 6670 has a TDP of 66w while the 5750 has 86w, and they both draw less than 18w while in idle. The only really big difference is the way they draw their power: The 6670 draws all of its power from the pci-e port which limits it to about 75w, while the 5750 has an additional 6-pin power connector wich makes it draw power from both the pci-e port and from the psu. In other words: Running power virii on the 6670 is a no-no xD

If you're lucky, you can find a 5770 for less than $100 as well. It has a TDP of 108w, but it only draws about 18w in idle, which is just a tad more than the 6670 and 5750.

The 6670 runs slightly cooler than the others, but it's not really that big of a difference.

Meh... I am probably putting up an order for a 6750.

The jump in performance seems quite huge (understandably so) and it doesn't cost 2x more (59% more actually).

I am looking at the non VaporX Saphire model, good or bad choice? At this price point the 450 is also a possibility so I am even more throned about it.

Another question... does the 6670 gets that much of a hit with DDR3 instead of 5? That model is considerably cheaper (as in 34%) but I am doubtful it's worth it... only XFX have these things on sale which makes me believe it's more of an OEM board trap kind of thing than a real value on the retail front (kinda like all those dirty cheap 64bits memory boards... dear god, they still exist Oo)

    HKE

I used Nvidia GT 430 , i run Mass Effect 1,2 , Bioshock 1,2 , Call of Duty Black Ops (wich one suck totally ass) , Assasins Creed 1,2 and Brotherhood , Prototype , Portal 1,2 Resident Evil 4 and 5 , Devil May Cry 3 and 4 , Metro 2033 everything max out no AA at 1680x1050 and no phyx
Also Dolphin Emulator (Wii and Gamecube emulator) i used to play Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 , Mario Sunshine , Zelda Twilight Princess and Wind Waker , Oboro Muramasa .

Even been a "low-profile" video card it was an awesome one , a must buy if you want a cheap one if you arent the hardcore gamer that plays at 60fps in 1080p with 16x of AA

I'm not so sure I would. It's exactly the same as the HD 5750. Well... almost. They've added partial support for HDMI 1.4a to it, for which they'll probably add a pretty penny to the price. TBH, I wouldn't touch it with a stick if I didn't find one for less than a HD 5750. I'd still be reluctant to get one even if I did. HD 5750 > 6750.

I can't say much about the Vapor-X cards; Never had any Sapphire cards xD. I even checked for reviews... couldn't find a single one.

And are manufacturers still using GDDR3? lol. The 6670 card won't suffer much of a hit if it has a 256-bit memory bus, as I assume the GDDR5 card has a 128-bit bus.

OK, found some promotions on two models and will stick with one or the other...

    6570 or 5670.

    The 6570 is a MSI model with - Clock GPU(MHz): 650 | Clock Memory(MHz): 1800

And the 5670 is form Sapphire with: GPU- 775 MHz | Memory 1600 MHz.

I managed to find them at the 50US$ mark which seems like a bargain so I will stick with one of them ^^

    Thanks again for the help.

    --

*edit: just found a HD5750 and an HD5830 (read some pretty nasty things about this one) for 90US$ which seems interesting.

As well as a HIS passive cooled HD5570 for 40US$ that is somehow appealing to me >< Is this one's performance THAT bad?

  16. Does the 6570 and 5670 use the same memory type? If they do, then they're practically equal. The 6570 is probably the better choise though.

The only bad thing I can remember about the 5830 is that it was way too expensive when it was released. It barely performed any better than the 5770 which was way cheaper. However, if the 5830 has the same price as the 5750, then the 5830 is the undisputed winner. The power consumption is way higher though: It's TDP is at 175W, with 25W in idle as compared to the 86W/16W of the 5750.

The 5830 does have much higher performance than the 6570, but it also costs about twice as much. It's all about the money, I guess :P

Oh, and you might want to make sure that your cpu doesn't bottleneck. It'd be a waste to get e.g. the 5830 if it can't perform much better than the 6570.

GDDR3 cards use less power than their GDDR5 counterparts, so they create less heat. The 6570 GDDR3 cards can be outfitted with passive coolers as well. As usual, GDDR3 has half the memory bandwidth as that of GDDR5, so they do suffer.

There are actually passive coolers for Intel's new Sandy Bridge cpus. Some are huge though, like this CR-100A from Nofen. It covers almost the entire motherboard. It's supposedly able to keep the i7 2600k, which is a great cpu, in the high 70°C's in Prime 95.

Thanks for the insight, made me going trough old sites I haven't visited in forever a less boring task ^^

Just so happens that I am kinda thinking my Athlon x2 will bottleneck anything I trow at those cards, so I am considering grabbing a new system and using the new onboard thingy a while until I can grab the 5830 next month or so.

A PII (Athlon 2 255 maybe so I can trow in a x6 later on) 555 with a Biostar 880g board and 4gigs cost about the same as the board and will probably make my whole life better ><

In the meantime I cracked my HIS card open and am taking some time to fix the cooler. Maybe with some under clocking I can avert the artifacts and give it a few more weeks/months of life. The cooler is pretty good so even in the worst case I can be considering trowing it on my new VGA anyway ¬¬

That passive CPU cooling is monstrous, your computer looks like a truck after installation, at that point (I7) makes me wonder how much better water cooling would be. ¬¬

The only time I ever passive cooled anything on my PC (other than north/southbridge) was on my old Athlon XP +2500 Barton Mobile.... it was so cool ;p

  18. Don't you just hate it when you're almost forced to buy a whole new computer just because your gfx card decides to break. I ended up buying new parts for like $1000 when my old Radeon x1950 Pro died. Couldn't just get a new gfx card when the mobo/cpu/ram were like 4 years old xD

And not only would that fanless heatsink make your computer look like a truck, it would probably make it weigh like one as well. I can't believe it's actualy meant to sit on top of the cpu with no other supporting structure. Their test board must've be made out steel or something.

Ah, and I've never actually bothered using passive cooling. Todays fans are practically dead silent when compared to the tiny fans people used to use way back when... gawd, it's like they were competing to have the loudest computer possible.

Indeed... i am quite pissed at the moment. Going to end up going for a 300US$ configuration AND will end up without a new VGA anyways (good thing I bought an overkill Corsair PSU back when my last one died, otherwise it would be another expense I can't afford to make) ¬¬

Hopefully the integrated HD4k won't be that bad and will allow some Xogun on lowest settings and a lag free LoL experience... but as I said, hopefully my current sucker still have some life in it, going to make some testing later on tonight.

Got myself (not arriving till Wednesday but still) a PII x4 (the "fake" 840 model that is actually an Athlon X4 but with really great performance) with 4gb of ram and a Biostar mobo. I would go forward on an I3 model, but Intel's motherboard offerings are 1. expensive and 2. suck if you don't go for the even more expensive models. So I will remain loyal to AMD ^^ I know my Maya renderings will thank me for the extra two cores.

The thing that pissed me the most though is what the HELL am I supposed to do with my current system?! It's by no means terrific but its pretty above average and could keep going on for internet/movie without much struggle, but at the same time nearly unsellable ¬¬

Even if I were to use it as a NAS my current motherboard only have 2 SATA ports so meh.

My computer stays on my room right next to my bed so I appreciate the quietness of current gen. air cooling more than most, I even went out of my way to spend an extra buck for my now dead ICEQ VGA and my coolers from Akasa but even then.... 10db < 0db ^^

Any experience with the unlocking of the two cores from the PII 555? I hear that lottery is quite harsh as in 10% of people manage to get a stable system, that's why I am trowing a few more on the x4 even with only 2mb of cache and no L3).

  20. Everything is so cheap nowadays, guess I'm finally replacing my HD4870 this year because of Skyrim.
