Abandoned Monuments

  1. http://www.cracktwo.com/2011/04/25-abandoned-soviet-monuments-that-look.html

been trying to think what to say here... but i'm simply stunned by the simple (and sometimes not so simple) beauty of these pieces.

"These structures were commissioned by former Yugoslavian president Josip Broz Tito in the 1960s and 70s to commemorate sites where WWII battles took place, or where concentration camps stood."

  10. If y'all ever get a chance to visit Eastern State Penitentiary in Philly do it, they've been restoring it for a few years so most of it is still in abandoned/decayed state, its fucking awesome. Plus its got Al Capone's cell and they filmed a few crucial scenes of 12 Monkeys in there.

  13. A 2002 video documentary by Thomas Nordanstad on battleship island Hashima, with Doutoku Sakamoto who grew up on the island before abandoning ship (pun fully intended) more than 30 years ago.

    http://www.nordanstad.com/?p=27

A more recent 2009 History documentary brought the spotlight on the island once again, demonstrating the effects of human neglect upon forsaken man-made constructions.
    From 3'55" to 11'36".

  14. Those monuments look really cool. Wonder if the builders of these monuments were thinking "This thing we were told to build looks pretty damn awesome" or "What are these random shapes we're being told to build??".

I love Life After People... one of my favourite documentaries of all time. So interesting.

  16. Ya know, if those monuments survive for the next 4000 years and humanity (probably have expanded into space) re-discover these, they will come up with many theories on what purpose those monuments have just as how popular culture treats the Pyramids of Egypt

  17. ^Pyramids are actual tombs. With chambers, treasure and other stuff like that, which is why it's got so much attention, history and interest.

These monuments were made for teh lulz.
It would either be thought of as "Ancient art", "Some surviving sculptures" or simply "Monuments of the past".

  18. Wow- I'm not usually one to appreciate architecture, but damn OP that's a great find.

  19. Im more curious as to what they'd speculate was the purpose for the buried E.T Atari games. If they guess they were buried to ceremoniously lure away some evil spirits, well they'd be close to what really happened xD

I know that Pyramids are tombs, but remember how Hollywood treats Pyramids...
