My First Eroge

  1. For one reason or another I only recently 'acquired' my first, Yin Yang X-change Alt.

I don't know what I expected, but it really wasn't what I expected.

The story was in third person with the protagonist giving narration, but I had always been under the impression these were first-person affairs. Given the plot of this one I guess it makes sense, though.

And the choices, I thought it would be far heavier with those, rather than just a handful of diverging paths. I think I played for almost two hours without getting one. Yea I wasn't expecting Mass Effect here but it seemed really sparse all the same.

So, is this the norm for these games? Is this just the style of this particular game/developer, or what? I'm curious about this stuff now but if its all just click and read for HOURS without anything, well, that's hardly a game now is it? Just an anime that you click through. It was oddly...addicting, though.

    Greetings ~

I see what your getting at (so, I took the liberty) to clarify your posting somewhat, so it doesn't look like a wall of text that is running into each other, for I would hate to see you lose your momentum on what your trying to say.

If I may, I would also suggest a slight Title change, as (maybe) -

    "My First Eroge Experience"

This way it will cover all your queries justly... let me know.

    A REMINDER ~

You do have about an hour to make changes as you see fit - (however) - if you miss that time frame, just let me know, and I can assist you.

Please excuse my initiative into these suggestions and slight changes...

    Respects ~

    (edit) ~

As far as the topic on hand, I have played several that are varying in style, and game play...

Most are as you have stated, where it's a static image, and you go through various sentences as you go along, before making a decision.

Here is the def via Wiki: ---> Eroge History

These were common place (before) I was exposed to the animé version, which coincidently was - "School Days" - for me...

It was the same as before, however, with the movements and improvements, it just made it all the more interesting.

I could go on for hours trying to see what will happen next and achieve those new paths to see what they held.

Indeed, I don't really remember the name of my first eroge, but Fate/Stay Night and School Days was great.

Don't mind me Deth, but if Katsura-san is very cute in the anime, she's even cuter in the eroge. Don't worry, I'm not trying to steal your waifu! I'm happy with mine ~

    I will ~ AGREE!!

~ and yes, (it's true) when Kotonoha made her ~ FIRST ~ appearance in the game, I was smitten, and so the rest is History..

Yep, been loyal/devoted, since that very day... *sigh*

I've yet to play Yin Yang X-Change (I played the first X-Change a few years ago and I've played most of the second one but I've had it on hold for about a year). X-Change is a visual novel, which is why it has those traits that you described.

If you want an eroge with some type of normal game play mechanics then you should pic one that isn't just a visual novel. While most eroge are visual novels, some of them include RPG elements as well.

Here are some recommendations for RPG eroge.

    1. Utawarerumono - AKA "Underwater Ray Romano" for those that have problems pronouncing or spelling the title. It's a visual Novel with SRPG gameplay. No official english release but there is a very good english fan-patch. It's got a very good story, decent gameplay, and also has a non-ero anime adaption (also pretty good but I recommend playing the game first so that you don't miss some of the things that the anime excluded). There's also an all-ages PS2 port of the game with improved gameplay.

    2. Tears to Tiara - Made by the same people who made Utawarerumono. Likewise, it's also an RPG (the gameplay in the PC version is in Real-Time) with an english fan-patch, has a very good story, and a non-ero anime adaption (I downloaded it a few months ago but haven't gotten a chance to watch it yet). There's also an all-ages PS3 port that switches the gameplay from real-time to turn-based.

    3. Sengoku Rance - Combines addicting RPG gameplay with tons of ero. By far my favorite eroge. It's the most recent game in the Rance series of eroge (which has been around for over 20 years), and to my knowledge it's the only Rance game with an english patch. Luckily, you won't need to know much about the previous games to enjoy it.

    4. Princess Waltz - Mostly just a visual novel but it includes some card-based gameplay. The story is pretty good (it reminded me of a light-hearted FSN) and it has some great voice work (Gotou Yuko and Itou Shizuka for instance).

There are plenty of other RPG eroge that I haven't listed though.

Also, if you want some more recommendations for visual novels then I suggest you lurk for Sifian's old "Visual Novel of the Month" threads. There are some pretty good VNs that are covered in those threads, as well as plenty of good VNs that were recommended that we didn't get around to before Sifian stopped doing those threads.

  10. I had always just assumed a visual novel was an eroge without the ero. Good info here, thanks. And Tears to Tiara, huh? The anime did feel like it was missing a very big something, so I guess it being adapted from that format would explain it. Guess I've got me some ISO hunting to do this weekend.

I should also mention that the character designs for the TTT anime and PS3 port are very different than the original PC game's. IIRC there was even an article on here about it a long time ago. I've only seen the OP for the PS3 version, but I must say that many of them look like completely different characters. While the character designs in the PC version were pretty bad, they also had a charm to them that the redesigns lack.

You may also want to check this for more info http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2008/07/20/tears-to-tiara-first-impressions/

Anyway, the gameplay in the PC version of tears to tiara looked like boring to me. On medium difficulty I just had to select the option to let the party behave as their role was supposed to (Fighters melee attacking, healers healing, etc) and they would win any battle. There is also an option to fast forward time. Don't know about the story though. It may be very interesting

Seeing articles written in first-person makes me realize how old TTT actually is (it feels new to me though since I only played it for the first time less than a year ago).

The battles are pretty easy on the lower difficulties. Once I got Syr (I refuse to call her "Llyr" since there's absolutely no "L" sound when they say her name) to a decent level, she was able to pretty much rape the enemies with her wide-area magic.
