Backpacking thru Japan

  1. So, I have a question/invitation

For many many years I've wanted to go backpacking somewhere, and Ive decided that I will do Japan. Now I'm contemplating doing it in 2 - 3 years (so 2013 or 2014) or earlier depending on how much money I can save, as I intend to really roam the country for as long as possible.

As an American, I can stay 90 days with only my passport.

As a Mexican, I can stay 6 months with only my passport (suck on that gringos! hahaha)

And I have both passports, as I have dual citizenship. Now if I were to get a general Visa, I could stay up to 18 months (as an American)

So, my plan is to roam Japan anywhere from 3 to 18 months. Again by then I should have saved a good ammount of money and learned Japanese (at least enough to keep me alive).

My question/request/invitation to y'all is well, anyone ever thought about doing just that? or anyone who has gone backpacking in another country for a good period of time? tips? suggestions? ideas?

feel free to comment, even if its just an idea right now, and the Mayans do come back in 2012 and rape us with their alien lasers and I can't do the trip, its still fun to plan these trips and day dream for a bit.

    Post ahoy!

  6. Why not make friends with people that live there (Japanese or not)? That way they can hook you up with a place to stay at. Do you dress well? J-chicks won't want anything to do with you if you aren't fashionable.

  8. Start working out. Backpacking is no joke, especially if you've been living a sedentary lifestyle. l: And with all the wackos out there, not dying in general is easier to do when you're fit. :x I figure this isn't hardcore off the grid backpacking, so just bring money, you can buy what you need when you need it. This place has some interesting stories and tips on hitchhiking/ backpacking in general.

I had always thought it would be cool to just go cross country with your whole livelihood on your back. Even though I would probably last maybe a couple days before I wanted to return but ehhh...

I'm sure doing this in a country your not native to would be quite difficult, albeit a very interesting experience. I'd really make sure you want to do this... I assume you've at least been camping and hiking before? Its surprisingly tiring just walking all day, especially when you've got gear on your back.
